Women’s History Month

Under the esteemed patronage of HRH Princess Basma Bint Talal, a fellow UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, and the artistic direction of Ghada Saba, Women’s Film Week is set in motion for its 10th edition in Amman, Jordan. Honoring the occasion of Women’s History Month, the week of films will spotlight works by and/or about women.

Women in cinema—from actors to producers and directors—will present their creative works in the span of five days from Tuesday, March 8 to Saturday, March 12, 2022 at the Rainbow Theatre, Jabal Amman, 1st Circle.
Addressing global issues such as climate changes, sustainability, gender equality, and the roles women play in these fields, the event places women at the forefront of change and peace and security makers of the world. This film week allows for the experience of story-telling which is central to the impact that the world of cinema has on discussing complex issues.
Listed below are the films to be showcased throughout the week:
Tuesday, March 8
Touching on subjects such as climate change, noise and air pollution, and waste management, these two films aim to bring awareness in hopes of decreasing waste.

Wednesday, March 9
This collection of films calls attention to gender equality in the workforce and the struggle of women in male-dominated industries. Sunú specifically addresses the preservation of culture under the threat of rural development.

Thursday, March 10
Losing Alaska fights to maintain cultures and traditions that face threat under the changing weather conditions while From the Kitchen to the Parliament touches on female activism.

Friday, March 11
Presenting further intersectional politics is The Ants and the Grasshopper which highlights racial and gender discrimination in the fight for climate change. Johanna Donhal: Visionary of Feminism is a tribute to Johanna Donhal, one of the first European feminists.

Saturday, March 12
Toxic fallout from industrial developments mostly affects those in indigenous and black communities in There’s Something in the Water. The latter discusses justice in the court of judicial law and the extremities of so.

In honor of Women’s History Month, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have announced that they will be working with organizations in support and advancement of gender equality.
Sharing the news via their Archewall Foundation, the couple will achieve their goals through new grants going on to state: “As we cross into Women’s History Month, and ahead of International Women’s Day next week, Archewell Foundation is announcing a number of non-profit investments in leading organizations working to advance gender equity, build policies that empower women and families, ensure meaningful media representation for women, and provide women with a network of tools and support for gaining employment.”

Amongst the four organizations receiving generous grants is Smart Works Charity, which works as a means to help women secure jobs. Markle joined the organization as a patron in 2019, and continues to support them. The other three organizations are The Center on Poverty and Inequity at Georgetown University Law Center, National Women’s Law Center, and The 19th. The grants will go towards helping marginalized girls in schools, hospitals, juvenile justice systems and so on, as well as focusing on BIPOC communities and those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. “We are thrilled to be receiving support from the Archewell Foundation, Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex!”, tweeted The National Women’s Law Center.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have continually stressed on the importance of amplifying the voices and lives of marginalized people and centering action towards equality. They mentioned, “Part of Archewell Foundation’s core commitment is to build strong, compassionate, and equitable communities across the world. Although these grants have been announced as we recognize Women’s History Month, the work they represent is relevant and vital every day of the year.”

Last year, on occasion of Women’s History Month, the couple worked with an organization by the name of World Central Kitchen whereby they provided meals to women at a restaurant in Chicago. Markle also worked with Smart Works last year and wrote personalized notes of encouragement to women receiving support from them. “Our hope with this effort is to show that, when we all participate, even the smallest actions can have a ripple effect,” expressed Meghan and Harry.
