Having faced Covid-19 restrictions, and now the Sag-Aftra strike, the Venice International Film Festival is no stranger to deviations. While its 80th edition may be a little different, stars who have been allowed to promote their work and celebrities outside of Hollywood are doing their part in ensuring the festival’s red carpet fashion is well taken care of. On Tuesday, Spanish-Argentine model Georgina Rodriguez stunned the crowd at the premiere of Enea in a dramatic red number courtesy of Vetements.

Picked from the cult-favorite brand’s SS24 ready-to-wear collection in collaboration with Lebanese couturier Elie Saab, the gown came with an off-shoulder neckline, a ruched bodice, a wraparound knot detail at the hip, and a floor-grazing hem. Elevating the old Hollywood charm of the dress, Rodriguez’s stylist Dav Martens paired it with white opera gloves and a ruby choker for a look reminiscent of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. However, a touch of grunge was added to her outfit via her statement footwear: a pair of black patent leather platform boots.

Red seems to be the color of choice for Rodriguez at this year’s festival, given that she arrived in Venice in yet another dress in the bold hue. Photographed hopping off the water taxi, Rodriguez wore a red, orange, and yellow ombré mini dress from Ferragamo’s SS23 collection, with a pair of red stilettos.

With a few more days left of this year’s festival, it’s safe to say that fans can expect to see more noteworthy style moments from Rodriguez.

The ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike means the red carpet at this year’s Venice Film Festival has been an unusually muted affair. Still, the opening days have not been entirely without fashion headlines. For starters, Carla Bruni made an appearance in a not-so-basic black gown by Valentino, and  Isabelle Huppert made sure all eyes were on her in a silver fringed number. Elsewhere, Amal Clooney treated the world to another glimpse of her impressive collection of archive fashion, floating into the 14th annual DVF Awards dressed in a blush slip dress from John Galliano’s autumn/winter 2000 Dior collection. Let’s just say no one was looking at Amal’s plus one – even though Amal’s plus one is George Clooney.

9 Of The Best Vintage Looks To Have Graced The Venice Film Festival Red Carpet

9 Of The Best Vintage Looks To Have Graced The Venice Film Festival Red Carpet

2022 was a vintage year at Venice Film Festival, particularly when it came to the red carpet. A whole host of stars, including Penélope Cruz, Tessa Thompson and Isabelle Huppert, opted to wear archival pieces – further evidence that the vintage boom we’ve seen on the red carpet of late isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Of course, vintage isn’t a new thing, with the likes of Cruz and Huppert, among others, often wearing pieces from the fashion vaults over the years. Back in 2018, Lady Gaga wore a white Azzedine Alaïa dress for the Venice premiere of A Star Is Born, while Irina Shayk sported a dazzling Versace number from spring/summer 1996 at the same event.

Dhafer L’Abidine Shares His Typical Day in Italy, and the Key to Red Carpet Style During the Venice Film Festival

Dhafer L’Abidine is among the many Arab stars taking the 79th edition of the Venice Film Festival by storm. As a revered Tunisian actor and regional ambassador for Cartier, which is the main sponsor of the festival, L’Abidine walked the red carpet at the opening ceremony, attended by renowned names like Catherine Deneuve, and Julianne Moore. The star looked dapper in a classic black tuxedo paired with a bow tie, and a stunning Cartier timepiece to complete the outfit.

Vogue Arabia caught up with L’Abidine to find out more about his experience at the Venice Film Festival, the key to his red carpet style, and more.

What are your essentials for traveling to Venice?
The essentials I would like to take with me are of course the excitement of being in such a great festival along with all the charm.
What are you looking forward to the most at the 79th edition of the festival?
What I’m looking forward to mainly is the amazing selection of films that comes from four corners of the world. They are completely different— from independent low budgets to big budgets, to new talent and seasoned stars. I think that the combination of films carries so many stories, that are exciting, different, and authentic. That’s what’s exciting about the festival.

What are the highlights of day one of the festival for you?
I think the highlight of day one is from the time you leave your hotel, getting to the boat or a taxi to the main event, arriving there, the arrival and just seeing everyone, and to seeing the public there, the enthusiasm. That energy is so amazing and positive. I think that’s really a special feeling, especially on day one, the first time everyone was there just waiting there for the festival to start, and that’s a really amazing energy that I think people will carry during the whole festival.

What according to you is the key to nailing red carpet style at the Venice Film Festival?
I think the main thing is to truly feel comfortable with whatever you choose to wear. That’s the main idea. If you are comfortable then you will look comfortable. That’s so important. The key is to be happy with whatever you choose and be confident about your choice, and it will look good on you.

What do you love the most about walking the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival?
What’s great about the red carpet in Venice is the presence of the public that is around the red carpet, and their enthusiasm. The festival has to be honest with the fact that it’s really about the energy of the people who love cinema who were there to just watch films and to see what’s going on, and the latest works that have been selected for the Venice Film Festival.
Photo: Instagram.com/dhaferlabidine
What does a typical day during the Venice Film Festival look like for you?
I think a typical day will start with a lovely coffee because I’m in Italy, then I’ll have a nice trip on a boat and enjoy the amazing scenery. Later, I will watch films, and enjoy meeting people from the industry which is what the whole festival is about. It is about the workshops, the films, the meetings and just being aware of what’s happening around the world with all the new projects, the new ideas, discovering new talents and meeting new people.

Carrying your bed sheets on the red carpet is never a good idea, but the construction of this cocoon also gives science fiction vibes, making the whole effort rather fun. The matching tights and heels are very of the now. And in case you don’t see it, there is a handbag there as well.

She looks gorgeous, but one wonders if she’s uncomfortable — does the front of the skirt need to be carried? Regardless of the logistics, the dress is cool and there’s drama in the glove and the slicked-back glam.

Thompson has already had a lengthy list of standout fashion moments during her time at the Venice Film Festival. She arrived in Venice on Tuesday wearing a gold sheer Victoria Beckham dress, then later changed into an Armani Privé spring 2009 couture look that consisted of a sculptural silver minidress worn over black sequined trousers.

She also attended a photo-call engagement wearing a black sheet set from Jason Wu’s fall 2022 ready-to-wear collection.

Prior to the Venice Film Festival, Thompson had another wave of memorable fashion moments during the press tour for “Thor: Love and Thunder.” She attended multiple premieres for the film, including one in Los Angeles where she wore a gray-blue metallic custom dress from Armani Privé and the London premiere where she wore a gold fringe dress from Oscar de la Renta’s resort 2023 collection.

All the Stars Reviving High-Fashion on the Venice Film Festival Red Carpet

All the Stars Reviving High-Fashion on the Venice Film Festival Red Carpet

The return of the Venice Film Festival as we know it called for looks that go beyond the usual red carpet glamour, and stars are delivering just that. After the event’s 77th edition in 2020 taking place in a more restrained format, this year, actors are seemingly back with a sartorial vengeance.
Generating buzz with her appearance was Zendaya, who made her Venice Film Festival debut this year. For the premiere of her film Dune, the newly-minted 25-year-old walked the red carpet in a custom Balmain couture dress with matching heels and 93ct Bulgari Magnifica high jewelry. “The bespoke leather gown was crafted using an exact model of the star’s bust, taking full advantage of the Balmain atelier and the house’s artisanal tradition,” shared Balmain of the dress. Later, the red carpet saw another sheer number, but this time a fully bejeweled one courtesy of Dakota Johnson in Alessandro Michele’s Gucci. Attending the premiere of her film The Lost Daughter, the actor wore a cap-sleeved gown with crystal detailing and fringing, paired with the house’s rose gold chain-link sandals.
For the premiere of Spencer, one of the most highly-anticipated ones at the festival, actor Kristen Stewart ditched dresses and suits to opt for a co-ord from Chanel’s FW21 couture collection. Paired with white Christian Louboutin heels, the pastel mint-green ensemble featured a lace trim tank top and trousers with a skirt overlay adorned with a black bow. Earlier in the week, actor Penélope Cruz arrived for the premiere of her film Parallel in a Chanel dress that was some 300 hours in the making. Selected by Cruz from the house’s FW21 couture collection, the dress is made of black mikado with an ecru silk tulle petticoat embellished with petal flounces. “I fell in love with that dress when I saw it on the catwalk,” shared the actor with Vogue. “I love the entire haute couture collection, it was brilliant, but this one was my favorite look. This is a very important movie for me, so I needed a special dress for that.”
