From retro-themed disco parties to effortless punk rock aesthetics, the ’70s and ’60s remain the most eclectic, ground-breaking, and sought-after fashion decades of all time.
It’s no surprise then that fashion trends from these decades keep resurfacing back into our era. Sky-high platform heels, vintage mini skirts, ruffled georgette crop tops, and, most notably, flared jeans are top favorites. In fact, the voluminous denim trend seems to be everywhere this summer, from couture runway shows to the streets of New York, and even online platforms like TikTok and Pinterest.
For close to three decades now, skinny jeans have reigned supreme, with plenty of drain-pipe inspiration coming in via It-Girls including Kendall Jenner and Rihanna. But with our A-listers moving their interests away from the skinny category to wide-legged numbers, boot cuts and flares, skinnies have officially made it to the back burner—at least for now.
With support from Balenciaga, Gucci, Michael Kors, and Dolce & Gabbana, to name a few, labels have welcomed the return of flared denims at their showcases, indicating that this time, the trend is here to stay. What makes them a favorite with the likes of Gigi and Bella Hadid, Jennifer Lopez, and Hailey Bieber? These denims are roomier than skinnies, but more feminine than boyfriend cuts. Another star who seems to be a fan of this staple is fashion’s favorite boy, Harry Styles. And if you’re a TV junkie, there’s no way you missed seeing these denims in shows like The Serpent.

While Hadid wore her super subtle flared denims with a matching jacket, Kendall Jenner has been known to make a case for matte black bootcuts. Typically lengthier than regular straight-cut denims, flares are best styled with heels, giving any casual look a more dressed-up vibe.

For anyone feeling bold, low-rise jeans are making a comeback, thanks to recent runway appearances at Versace. Bella Hadid was spotted at Raymond Hall embracing this modern, polarizing jeans trend. Styled it with a button-up classic white crop top, the model completed the look with gold hoops and chunky trainers. The faded blue shade is an excellent option if you find black too harsh or lighter shades of blue too soft.

Instead of pants that button at her rib cage, Hailey Bieber has been seen wearing low-rise cargos and jeans to just about every casual outing, and given her fashion influence, it has many questioning whether skinnies are “in” at all. This not-quite-flared, but not-quite-skinny silhouette soared for a moment back in the 2000s before the era of skinny jeans took over. Along with other loose styles, the boot-cut is making a resurgence, as emphasized quite clearly by Jenner in her recent outfits. Jenner was recently snapped out and about in Los Angeles in bootcut jeans and an oversized blazer – a current obsession trending across all platforms. With a plain white tee tucked inside her blue bootcut, she accessorized this basic outfit to a tee with chunky sunglasses.
Jumpsuit

Valeria Lipovetsky, Dior’s brand ambassador, thinks that there’s really no reason to be scaling a forty-foot utility pole to pull off a jumpsuit. While a non-traditional choice, jumpsuits are steadily coming back into the fashion scene. Lipovetsky was spotted in Miami wearing a distinctive baby pink button-up jumpsuit that featured flared pants.
The casual collar and double breast pockets with large buttons draw inspiration from the western Nevada theme. From pearls for a dressy occasion or satin slips on summer nights, these flared jumpsuits can be paired with just about anything.

While black is enough to make a statement on its own, there is only one color that can make it look that much better. For years, the combination of stark black with opulent gold has permeated collections and wardrobes everywhere, making it the go-to for all occasions that call for insouciant, no-nonsense glamour.
