Mercedes-Maybach Celebrates Its 100th Anniversary With a Limited Edition S680 4MATIC Sedan

Making it to 100 is a true accomplishment, which is why Maybach plans to celebrate the feat in style.

As has been rumored for months now, Mercedes’s most luxurious sub-brand has announced it will observe its centennial with an exclusive S-Class variant called the Edition 100. Limited to an appropriately small production run of—you guessed it—100 units, the glammed-out sedan blends both beauty and brawn thanks to a gutsy V-12 engine.

The Edition 100 will be based on the top-of-the-line Maybach S680 4MATIC sedan that was announced earlier this spring. The two cars are basically identical from a technical perspective, which means the new variant is powered by the same muscular 6.0-liter V-12 biturbo engine. Mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels (hence the 4MATIC in the name), the mill can generate a maximum 621 hp and 664 ft lbs of torque. The car may be massive (it’s seven inches longer than any other S-Class), but it’s still nimble enough to jet from zero to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds and has a top speed of 130 mph.

The details are where the 100 Edition really separates itself from the already luxurious S-Class. The otherwise-untouched exterior has been hand-painted in two-tone Cirrus Silver and Nautical Blue. The commanding four-door also rides on a set of 20-inch monoblock forged wheels finished in dark chrome. There’s also special badging on the D-pillar and the base of the Maybach logo and hubcaps have been inscribed with “Edition 100.”
The makeover continues inside the sedan’s spacious cabin, where you’ll find unique Crystal White and Silver Grey Pearl quilted leather covering the vehicle’s four seats. This is accented with Piano Black trim, pinstripe detailing and plenty of Edition 100 badging. The car doesn’t feature the marque’s massive, dashboard-spanning MBUX Hyperscreen, but the digital gauge cluster and infotainment system both take up a sizable amount of visual real estate. There are also screens on the back of the headrests of the front seats so  passengers in the rear can catch up on the news or binge shows while sipping on bubbly from the back’s champagne cooler. The interior is also well-insulated so that you’ll barely hear the roar of the car’s V-12.

No pricing has been announced for the S680 4MATIC Edition 100 yet, but since it’s a Maybach, and a limited edition at that, we suspect the cost will more more than rival other luxury cars in its class. The sub-brand has yet to announce a sticker price for the S680, but it’s expected to be around $200,000, according to CNET Roadshow. We’d expect the Edition 100 to command quite the premium over that. Deliveries are expect to begin in the first half of next year.
If you like the idea of an Edition 100 Maybach, but your vehicle proclivities run even larger than the S-Class, you’re in luck. An anniversary edition of the GLS 600 SUV is expected to follow later this year.

Can any vehicle, real or imaginary, compete with the Batmobile? As far as Batman is concerned there’s only one answer—the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6.

No, the futuristic concept car wasn’t the winner of a recent poll of the Caped Crusader’s most auto-obsessed fans. Instead, it’s the vehicle his alter ego, billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne, will drive in the upcoming Flash movie.

Wayne’s love of the sleek speed machine was revealed in some candid photos from the set of Warner Bros. and DC’s latest superhero movie that were posted to Twitter by YouTuber Grace Randolph over the weekend. The pictures show Michael Keaton, returning to the role for the first time since 1992’s Batman Returns, dressed in a snazzy suit just feet away from his even more stylish ride. If you’re wondering why Keaton is appearing in the film after nearly three decades away from the role, it’s because the movie will feature inter-dimensional travel as a key plot point (Ben Affleck will also appear as Batman/Wayne).

This is his car, not Affleck’s, and I hear this is from the end of the movie and he’s now permanently in the #DCEU

What a car Gotham’s most famous resident has chosen for himself. First unveiled as a coupé at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2016 (and again as a cabriolet the next year), the car stretches nearly 20 feet from bumper to bumper and features a head-turning Art Deco-inspired body and a spaceship-like interior. Under the hood is a fully electric drivetrain capable of generating 750 horses and launching the car from zero to 60 in under four seconds. One interesting thing about Wayne’s Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is that it appears to be finished in a glossy black or midnight blue coupé. The vehicle has previously only been shown off as a red coupé or a blue convertible.
Of course, the appearance of the Vision 6 in the movie isn’t all that surprising. Warner Brothers and Mercedes have a long-running placement deal, according to The Drive. Two of the automakers cars—the E-Class Cabriolet and AMG Vision GT—were featured in the studio’s last superhero extravaganza, 2017’s Justice League. Still, product placement or not, the Vision 6 does seem like the sort of car an unimaginably wealthy thrillseeker like Wayne would use as an everyday driver.

Bruce Wayne’s ride isn’t the only Vision 6 to grace a screen of late. Pop culture obsessives may remember another Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 cameo from the last year: Drake drove the dazzling car in the video for his 2020 single “Laugh Now, Cry Later.” But unlike his comic book counterpart, the rapper managed to get his hands on two examples of the concept—the coupé and the cabriolet.

It Sure Looks Like Mercedes Will Put a V-12 in the New S-Class for Maybach’s 100th Birthday

It Sure Looks Like Mercedes Will Put a V-12 in the New S-Class for Maybach’s 100th Birthday

Mercedes wants to make sure Maybach’s 100th birthday is one to remember.

Earlier this week, the German automaker shared a tribute to its high-end sub-brand on the occasion of its centennial, calling it the “pinnacle of luxury and creative empowerment.” While the press release was filled with promises of good things to come, what really caught our eye was an image of a stately, new sedan with V-12 badging.

The accompanying photo depicts what appears to be a special 100th anniversary model based on the W223 S-Class that was introduced last fall. The elegant sedan is reason enough for excitement, but what will really set hearts aflutter is the V-12 badge on its front fender, just above one of Maybach’s signature spoked wheel.

Shortly after the introduction of the new S-Class, Maybach introduced its own version of the sedan, the S580. The four-door, though, is only powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with EQ-Boost mild-hybrid technology. Mated to a nine-speed automatic, it produces 496 hp and 516 ft lbs of torque, though its hybrid tech boosts those figures by 21 and 184, respectively. That’s a lot of power, even for a car as big as the S580 (its wheelbase is seven inches longer than the W223’s). But just imagine how much more punch the bigger V-12 could provide. The last-generation Maybach S-Class was available with a twin-turbo V-12 that churned out a beastly 621 horses and 738 ft lbs of torque. We’d expect this iteration to have just as much grunt, if not more.

It should be noted that, despite the image included in Mercedes’s tribute to Maybach, a V-12 version of the new S-Class has yet to be confirmed. When reached for comment, a representative for Mercedes-Maybach told Robb Report, “Actually this is just a teaser and we have no other material to share.”
Teasers, of course, sometimes presage things to come. If the car does eventually come to fruition, the sedan, which Motor1.com reports will be called the S650 or S680, would likely feature the only V-12 in the entirely of the Mercedes lineup.
The end of Mercedes-Maybach’s celebratory press release also included a brief mention of the division’s first fully electric vehicle, which makes sense considering its parent company’s recent push electrification and the debut of the first all-electric Mercedes sedan. The vaunted sub-brand may be 100 years old, but it’s clearly not ready to stop evolving just yet.
