The phrase “cult item” gets thrown around a lot, however, when the same piece has been worn by It-girls, supermodels, and royalty, it certainly seems worthy of the accolade. It was back in September that Bella Hadid walked in the Victoria Beckham spring/summer 2023 show wearing a lime-green midi, and the dress is fast becoming a familiar sight in celebrity circles this summer, popping up everywhere from the Coronation to Wimbledon.

Victoria Beckham is always the best ambassador for her own brand, and so naturally was the first to wear the standout green midi-dress off the runway, pairing it with black leather boots for a date with husband David in New York in October. Just three months later, Kendall Jenner wore the midi for a party at Nobu in Dubai, styling it exactly as her friend Bella wore it on the runway, with black leather opera gloves, her hair slicked back and pointed black leather boots by The Row.

By May the dress was back in front of the flashbulbs once again, this time on Queen Letizia of Spain, who attended celebrations to mark the Coronation of King Charles III in a series of boldly colourful looks. She wore the Victoria Beckham dress for a reception at Buckingham Palace on the eve of the ceremony itself. Wearing a London-based designer was, of course, a diplomatic choice from Letizia, who made the look her own by adding a diamond brooch in a delicate bow shape onto the left shoulder, as well as the shoe of choice for female royalty: a classic suede pump.
The dress’s latest high-profile outing came at Wimbledon this week, where Romeo Beckham’s model girlfriend Mia Regan showed her support for his mum’s brand by wearing the hero piece – a perfect choice for a day of tennis and Pimm’s at SW19. (Ever the dutiful VB ambassador, Mia added one of the Chain Pouch handbags, too.)

The dress was unquestionably the hero style of the spring/summer 2023 season for VB. The show opened with a lavender version, supermodel Bella walked in the increasingly popular green iteration, and Beckham took her final bow at the end of the show wearing the same dress, but in black.
“There are a lot of dresses in the collection, which I’m really excited about,” Beckham said to Vogue at the time. “Things feel perfectly complicated. It’s a lot of craft, but it looks very effortless. There’s an ease with the collection, but you can see that there’s a lot of work.” She explained that it’s the simplicity of the shape that makes the dress so elegant: “We’re not burying ourselves under lots of layers. I think it’s a neater silhouette.”

Given the dress is from a spring/summer collection, it’s a style perfectly geared towards al fresco events and wedding season, however the shade of green is a seasonless color that looks just as good with boots as it does with sandals – as Kendall proved at the start of the year.

One key takeaway from the spring/summer 2022 shows? Our knitwear drawers are in for a colorful upgrade. Cool-girl brand The Elder Statesman has provided the LA crowd with their rainbow jumpers: Hailey Bieber shrugged its patchwork cardigan over The Attico’s cult zebra-print bikini recently, while Kendall Jenner threw on an oversized sweater – and matching hat – from its autumn/winter 2021 collection a fortnight ago.

Emily Ratajkowski and Victoria Beckham are embracing the colorful knits movement, too. The former recently sported an acid-bright turtleneck, while VB modeled a bright red jumper and sunshine yellow trousers from her own collection, joking on Instagram that Ronald McDonald “stole [her] look”. Rihanna, on the other hand, has gravitated towards lavender hues, including a knitted vest by London-based designer Martine Rose, and Beyoncé has shown colorful knits’ potential as evening wear with a tangerine rib-knit bodysuit by Area.
Jacquemus’s spring/summer 2022 collection included Vitamin C knits.
Avid knitter Gabriela Hearst debuted sprightly homespun pieces for spring/summer 2022.

The street-style gang cemented the trend outside the SS22 shows, with the catwalks reflecting their playful fashion mood: Gabriela Hearst, Blumarine, Molly Goddard, Altuzarra, and Acne Studios all debuted jolly knits. The trend can be felt over on Depop, too; it takes just one search to discover the wealth of homemade options available. Mia Regan is a keen advocate of supporting lesser-known brands: the Gen-Z influencer boasts a wardrobe bursting with lively handmade goods.

Our advice: be bold and bright with your knitwear choices this winter.
