All eyes have been on the streets of Paris as sartorial enthusiasts from around the world flocked to Paris Fashion Week. While the runway certainly presented some unforgettable collections, a lot of our major style inspiration came from the Arab tastemakers as they flitted around corners on their way to fashion shows or lounged in bistros.
The much-awaited Loewe FW23 show under Jonathan Anderson had many Arab faces in attendance with Rania Fawaz supporting an oversized knit dress in lavender and furry sage green boots reflecting the playful identity of the brand. Saudi influencer Hala Abdallah was spotted at the show in denim-on-denim with a white Loewe puzzle edge bag in her hand. Later, Abdallah opted for a burgundy ensemble at Stella McCartney with delicately designed jewelry from her personal brand Ofa.
Karen Wazen was understandably busy this season as she attended multiple shows in Paris – from Lebanese couturier Elie Saab to Isabel Marant, Dior, and Coperni. Valentino FW23 also saw a number of Arab stars in attendance – Salma Abu Deif was spotted in a shimmering mini-dress while Emirati singer Balqees adorned herself in a modest animal print jumpsuit.

Winnie Harlow, Imaan Hammam and Shay Mitchell at the Fendi show
New York Fashion Week had a star-studded beginning this season as some of the fashion industry’s biggest names arrived in the Big Apple for the Fendi show. Marking 25 years of the iconic Baguette created by Silvia Venturini Fendi, Kim Jones, the fashion house’s artistic director of womenswear collaborated with Marc Jacobs on a stunning collection that was “an interpretation and celebration” that is not only a wardrobe staple but also a pop culture icon.
Seated on the front row was Sarah Jessica Parker, the actor who famously said, “It’s not a bag, it’s a Baguette” as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex And The City, thus forever linking the arm candy to New York, and later, collaborated with Fendi on a pink sequin version. Dressed in a neutral-toned ensemble with a pop of color courtesy of the Baguette, Jessica Parker took her place next to Kim Kardashian, who arrived in a sparkly mesh dress. The reality TV star and entrepreneur, too, has a special relationship with the fashion house following the much-loved collaboration between her shapewear brand Skims and Fendi. Supermodel power was in full force at the show, with Kate Moss giving rocker chic style a spin in a strappy dress with black boots, alongside Grace Jones, Christy Turlington, Amber Valetta, Winnie Harlow, and Imaan Hammam.
Also in attendance were friends of the fashion house and stars from the entertainment world, including Stranger Things actor Natalia Dyer, Maude Apatow from Euphoria, The Marvellous Mrs Maisel‘s Rachel Brosnahan, and Academy Award winner Naomi Watts.

With a number of high-profile collaborations in her career, there’s no doubt that Amina Muaddi‘s passion is palpable in every launch. For her latest, the Jordanian-Romanian accessories designer is taking things a step further by honoring her Arab roots through a full-fledged campaign.
The imagery accompanies Drop 2/22 of Muaddi’s namesake label beloved for its edgy heels, which are modeled by Imaan Hammam of Moroccan-Egyptian heritage in this campaign. The former Vogue Arabia cover star forms part of a Middle East and North African team enlisted by Muaddi to honor the collective Arab culture and the DNA of her brand. While the looks were styled by Jahleel Weaver, who is Muaddi’s longtime collaborator, friend, and stylist to Rihanna, the photos were shot in Cairo by Egyptian-British visual artist Dexter Navy.

“I had been trying to make this project happen with Dexter for quite a long time,” shares Muaddi with Vogue Arabia. “I really wanted to do something meaningful, an ode to my Arab heritage and a celebration of our culture.” Although born in Romania to a Jordanian father and Romanian mother, Muaddi and her family moved to Amman shortly after her birth, where she spent part of her childhood. “I had a big family and a lot of cousins who I would play all the time with,” the designer had recollected in a previous conversation with editor-in-chief Manuel Arnaut. “I had this garden where my family had figs and olive trees, and to this day when I taste figs, I remember Jordan so it was definitely an important moment of my life.”
In the campaign, Hammam wears the brand’s new embellished heels, which would fit right in on a red carpet walked by one of Muaddi’s many A-list clients just as much as they blend in with Cairo’s vibrant scenes in the campaign. “This project is important because it is close to our hearts,” says the designer. “There isn’t nearly enough representation and spotlight on people with our background. It was crucial for me to work with an almost entirely Arab crew.”

First announced back in September 2021, fashion houses Fendi and Versace’s collaborative line, aka #Fendace, dropped today in Dubai, Los Angeles, Kuwait, Paris and Tokyo, and as expected, has received a wave of appreciation from fashion enthusiasts. Featuring the iconic Naomi Campbell, Moroccan-Egyptian-Dutch model Imaan Hammam, South Sudanese-Australian beauty Adut Akech, American model of South Sudanese heritage Anok Yai, Ethiopia’s Amar Akway, Lina Zhang from China, and Anja Rubik from Poland, the campaign was shot by none other than Steven Meisel, and seamlessly embodies the fun, playful vibe of the line.

Marrying Fendi’s love for logomania with Versace’s globally-loved baroque patterns, the Fendace collection pops with a vibrant palette and lots of sparkle. “It’s a swap rather than a collaboration and, most of all, it is done out of friendship,” Kim Jones shared. “It is the beauty of togetherness after time apart and a celebration of women who have inspired me so much.”

And it looks like Donatella Versace couldn’t agree more. “The campaign captures the same sense of friendship and energy we had when we were designing the collection. Kim is a visionary designer and innovator. To me, Fendace will always mean love,” the designer said.

Among the most exciting creations to be found in the new Fendace collection are the reinvented versions of two classics. Versace’s signature La Medusa bag will be available in two alternate print finishes, with the La Medusa plaque sharing space with Fendi FF trims, and the Trigreca sneakers can be seen doused in Versace’s gold baroque work and Fendi’s trademark print.

As the modeling industry is slowly evolving into a more socially aware space, the 2021 Model of the Year Awards acknowledged some of the industry’s biggest names across the world, with a spotlight on personalities who are making an impact beyond borders. The finalized list of winners and nominees is officially out, with part Arab models dominating the scene through their limitless efforts towards breaking boundaries and instilling changes.
The award categories were split into seven different male and female sections this year, including Breakout Star of the Year, Social Mover of the Year, Top Model turned Actor of the Year, and the Lifetime Achievement Award. Advocating for women’s health, education, and equal rights as the global ambassador of grassroots organization She’s the First, Moroccan-Egyptian model Imaan Hammam was nominated under the Social Mover category alongside other models like Karlie Kloss, Emily Ratajkowski, and Arizona Muse.

Somali-Norwegian influencer, blogger, model and healthcare professional Rawdah Mohamed, who has in the past played Vogue Arabia cover star and was also seen at the Ball of Arabia this month, was nominated as well for her activism efforts for Muslim women around the world.

While British model Adwoah Aboah was also voted for Social Mover of the year, part-Palestinian model Bella Hadid reportedly received the most votes.
Algerian-French model Loli Bahia was also seen on the nominations list under the Breakout Star category, which only seems fitting considering her quick rise in the industry, which has scored her several campaigns and a roster of impressive editorial work. Bahia has gained the attention of fashion houses like Chanel, Saint Laurent, Fendi, Givenchy, and Valentino. Other models nominated alongside the 19-year old included Grace Valentine, Georgia Palmer, and Estelle Chen, which placed Bahia second after the American model Quannah Chasinghorse.

French-Algerian model Takfarines Bengana was nominated under the Male Breakout Model category. In case you missed it, Bengana’s career has picked up significantly this year. As for top model-turned-actor, Squid Games star HoYeon Jung was voted winner of the category by the industry and public polls.

If you love fashion and computer games, or are a budding stylist who dreams of dressing an A-list star, then you’re in luck. Until December 9, DREST is giving its players the opportunity to cast and style supermodels in a series of photoshoot challenges.
Natalia Vodianova, Precious Lee, Irina Shayk, Imaan Hammam and Candice Huffine have joined DREST, an interactive luxury styling game, to feature as hyper-realistic avatars allowing players to dress their favorite models in a series of outfits.

The models can be cast through a Booking Fee that grants players a set number of uses, after which the talent will need to be re-booked. Once models are booked the player can style them in a number of outfits, with more than 200 leading brands to choose from including Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Prada, Off-White, Loewe, Chloé, Thom Browne, Burberry, Stella McCartney and Fenty. Playing stylist, players can also style their model’s hair with nine different styles to choose from, each designed by leading celebrity hairstylist Sam McKnight.

Taking the experience up another echelon – blending virtual with reality – once the look is complete, players can not only share their creation but can also shop the pieces, thanks to a partnership with Farfetch.
On being chosen to have her own avatar, model Imaan Hamman tells Vogue Arabia, “I remember being very excited when I got asked to be part of DREST. When I was a little girl I always had a thing for playing dress up with avatars, it’s so my era! Fashion for me has always been an outlet where I could be myself in many ways and be bold, so having my own real life avatar is a dream come true. It was such a cool experience, so different from a normal day to day shoot. It went by so fast. I had to stand in the middle of the room and I was surrounded by a 1000 mini cameras/lenses in a circle that took a photo of every single part of the body. How cool?”

The models admits playing with the latest fashion items appeals to her, saying “I would definitely have lots of fun with just exploring and experimenting. I would love to dress up in three different kinds of styles: classy, street and sexy.”
While shopping in the virtual world and online is fun, the former Vogue Arabia cover star admits, when it comes to buying clothes she still prefers IRL. “It’s so important for me to be able to try the clothes on before buying – to feel the fabrics and feel confident,” she says. “I love to shop when I am in Paris, I feel like there are always better collections there than in other cities. I love Galeries Lafayette and Le Marais area is where you can always find me – I have a huge love for vintage and I always find the best pieces there.”

Behind the collaboration between the models and DREST is a philanthropic endeavor. “We have made a pledge to match 50% of revenue earned by the supermodels in-game and donate this to their respective causes through charitable donations,” explains Lucy Yeomans, Creator, Founder & Co-CEO, DREST.  For Hamman, her cause is She’s The First, “a non-profit that fights for a world where every girl chooses her own future. We work with local organizations to make sure all girls are educated.”
