Watch: Hyundai’s Hydrogen-Powered N Vision 74 Concept Is the DeLorean Reboot You Were Hoping For

Hyundai thinks the past can help inform its high-performance future.

The South Korean marque’s performance-oriented N sub-brand showed off a bold new concept called the N Vision 74 on Friday. Although the vehicle has a retrofuturist design based on a car that’s nearly five decades old, its hydrogen fuel cell powertrain is as forward-thinking as they come.

Even with five-plus months to go, it seems safe to say that the N Vision 74 will be one of the best-looking concepts of 2022. The sporty two-door has a look heavily inspired by the Pony Coupe concept from 1974. That prototype, which never went into production, was designed by the legendary Giorgetto Guigiaro, who was responsible for the BMW M1, the Lotus Esprit S1 and, most famously of all, the DMC DeLorean. The new concept isn’t as boxy as its predecessor—it has large rounded fenders over each wheel—but they share the same angular profile. The car also features a pixel light package, giant rear wing and disc wheels.

Large fenders and a wing aren’t the only thing that separate the new concept from the Pony Coupe. It also swaps out its internal-combustion engine for a hybrid setup that pairs a hydrogen fuel cell with a 62.4-kWh battery connected to two electric motors, one of which is mounted on each rear wheel. Hyundai says the new powertrain will be able to pump out 671 hp and 664 ft lbs of torque. It will also be able to push the car to a top speed in excess of 155 mph, while boasting an impressive range of over 373 miles.
While the N Vision 74 may have grabbed all the headlines this weekend, it wasn’t the only peek Hyundai offered of its high-performance future. The company also unveiled the RN22e. The prototype is based on the Ioniq 6 sedan, but features the same all-electric powertrain that can be found in the Kia EV6 GT. The all-wheel-drive setup is expected to generate 577 hp and 546 ft lbs of torque.

“RN22e and N Vision 74 play an important role in the strategic development of our entire product lineup, especially our electrified, high-performance vehicles,” Thomas Schemera, executive vice president and head of the Customer Experience division at Hyundai, said in a statement. “Rolling labs represent the continuous development of our most advanced technologies. This unique approach makes us ready for the challenges of the future by empowering us to push ourselves to the limit.”
Since both cars have been explicitly labeled concepts, it’s unclear if either will ever go into production. There is a chance the RN22e may offer a direct peek of the Ioniq 6 N that is rumored to debut next year. Unfortunately, the chances of the N Vision 74 becoming a reality seem slimmer. Still, since Hyundai has also referred to the vehicles as “rolling labs” we feel pretty confident that elements from both will filter out into the marque’s production models at some point.

Genesis’s G70 Shooting Brake Will Debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed Next Month

Genesis’s G70 Shooting Brake Will Debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed Next Month

Genesis wants to make sure its first appearance at England’s Goodwood Festival of Speed is electric.

The carmaker, Hyundai’s luxury offshoot, has just announced its G70 Shooting Brake will make its global debut at this year’s show, alongside a new electric grand tourer and the rest of the marque’s impressive line-up.
The first five models in the Genesis European range will be on show at the iconic West Sussex festival, which will go ahead with a full capacity crowd from July 8 through 11. The family of four-wheelers will take on Goodwood’s world-famous hill climb in what’s being described as “the first manufacturer convoy of its kind.”

The standout is the highly anticipated G70 Shooting Brake. First teased earlier this year, the swoopy high-performance wagon embodies the futuristic design DNA of Genesis while honoring the rich history of the shooting brake in Europe. It seems fitting, then, that it should make its world debut across the pond.

Another highlight will be the Genesis X. The carmaker is positioning this all-electric concept car as a grand tourer for a new generation, and a car at the apex of what Genesis calls “sustainable luxury.” It features the automaker’s signature “Two Lines” motif—that is, dual-bar lights front and back—along with its trademark “G Matrix” grille and state-of-the-art technology. While the GT may not make it to production, it represents a major step forward for the category.

“Honoring the region is so important to Genesis, which is why we chose to debut both vehicles at the distinguished British festival,” Dominique Boesch, managing director for Genesis Europe, said in a statement. “In particular, the G70 Shooting Brake recognizes the automotive heritage of Europe in both name and iconic design, unmistakably demonstrating the brand’s commitment to the region.”

The all-electric Genesis X will also grace Goodwood.

Also on show will be the sleek G80 sedan, the GV80 luxury SUV and the G70 sedan. Orders for these three cars, plus the GV70 SUV, are expected to open across Europe this summer. Genesis also has an electrified G80 in the works, along with three new EVs to be announced within a year.

Hyundai’s New Robotic Car Can Drive—and Walk—on the Surface of Another Planet

Hyundai’s New Robotic Car Can Drive—and Walk—on the Surface of Another Planet

Hyundai’s latest Transformer-like robocar won’t just be able to travel over Earth’s most treacherous terrains. It’ll be able to do the same off-planet as well.
The South Korean auto giant has just unveiled its latest Ultimate Mobility Vehicle (UMV), the TIGER X-1, and this one is designed for particularly extreme environments, like the Moon. And while the design doesn’t have room for passengers, that may enable it to go where no man (or vehicle) has gone before.

TIGER, which stands for Transforming Intelligent Ground Excursion Robot, is the division’s second UMV. The uncrewed machine features a modular architecture, a sophisticated leg and wheel locomotion, 360-degree directional control and an array of sensors, according to a press release. Its main use will be to carry payloads over remote and inaccessible terrain; to get to these remote locations, it will be able to operate as either a four-wheel-drive vehicle or four-legged walking robot. And when Hyundai’s engineers say “inaccessible” they aren’t kidding, specifically noting that the vehicle can be used to explore “the surface of another moon or planet.”

“Vehicles like TIGER, and the technologies underpinning it, give us an opportunity to push our imaginations,” Dr. John Suh, Head of New Horizons Studio, said in a statement. “We are constantly looking at ways to rethink vehicle design and development and re-define the future of transportation and mobility.”
The company has made no effort to hide its interest in robotics. The automaker recently acquired a $1.1 billion controlling stake in Boston Dynamics—they of the dystopian robot dogs—and established a new division, New Horizons Studio, in Silicon Valley last fall, specifically tasked with exploring the ways robotics can push the boundaries of transportation.
Hyundai seems very excited about its latest UMV, but that doesn’t mean it’s given up on its first yet. The decidedly-more-Earthbound Elevate concept made its debut at CES in 2019 and looks like the AT-AT Walkers from The Empire Strikes Back. The big difference between it and the TIGER: it’ll actually have room for a driver and passengers.
