It’s Officially Claw Clip Summer

It’s Officially Claw Clip Summer

If you’re seeing claw clips everywhere, it’s because they are.As we reach the thick of summer, it seems women and girls have traded in the regular elastic hair tie for freshly fashionable claw clips. Now, the clips commonly seen are brightly colored, bejeweled and, at times, shaped into popular motifs, such as butterflies or flowers.
Though popular retailers including Madewell and Urban Outfitters have upped their claw clip and hair accessories collections in the last year, it’s two indie brands that perhaps stand out the most in the category — Emi Jay and Chunks.
The Los Angeles-based Emi Jay, founded by Julianne Goldmark, has become one of the most popular brands for a wide assortment of hair clips and accessories. Its products feature vibrant hues, prints, adornments and fun shapes. One of her best-selling products, The Big Effing Clip, has been produced in colors like neon green, pink and blue, and seen on celebrities Dua Lipa and Kendall Jenner.

“With Emi Jay, we come up with so many unique shapes, colors and collections that girls just really love to collect them. I’d say 80 percent of our customers always come back,” Goldmark told WWD. “As summer comes around, our products have always been perfect for it since they’re super colorful and summery. The claw clip is just a cuter, easier way to keep your hair up.”

The strong resurgence of the claw clips can also be largely attributed to the comeback of style trends from the ‘90s and early Aughts, with many consumers longing to relive that nostalgic time period through fashion, according to Goldmark and Chunks founder Tiffany Ju.
“We kind of forgot about clips for a long time,” Ju told WWD. “They were big in the ’90s, but then they kind of were relegated to the drugstore — you know, the ugly brown ones at the drugstore — so people just forgot about them. Then I think people remembered this is a part of our body that we could accessorize again, so people are now going nuts for it.”
Though Chunks had always been known for their now-signature black-and-white checkered clip, the Seattle-based brand received meteoric worldwide fame almost overnight after Jisoo of Blackpink mentioned she always carries a Chunks claw clip in a “What’s in My Bag” video for Vogue Korea. In particular, the K-pop star loves the Checker Claw and confessed to owning virtually every colorway.
After the Vogue feature, orders for Chunks from South Korea increased by 3,000 percent. “It was crazy,” Ju said.

According to a report by Google, searches for “flower claw clips” in the U.S. have tripled in the last year, with searches for “flat claw clips” increasing by more than 850 percent. Queries for claw clips in general reached a record high in the U.S. for the month of June.
At this point, both Emi Jay and Chunks’ distinguishable claw clips are serving as conversation-starters for people in New York City and Los Angeles, who instantly recognize the designs.
“My friends in New York City mentioned on their walk to work every day, they see girls wearing an Emi Jay clip and they always know it’s ours,” Goldmark said. “I feel like it’s a really cool connecting moment. It’s so amazing to see a brand bring people together in the simplest of ways.”
Ju agreed, saying she’s heard stories from her customers exchanging stories and connecting with others because they own a clip from her brand.

“I’ve gotten so many personal stories from our customers of these bonding moments they have in an elevator with a stranger over their Chunks,” she said. “I just love it. It’s the best thing I could hear from a customer.”

According to Google, “flower claw clip” and “butterfly claw clip” both take the top two rankings for most-searched styles, both of which are now signature to Emi Jay’s collections. Meanwhile, “checkered claw clip” rounds out the top five — that pattern is strongly associated with Chunks.
Aside from their obvious hair-based uses, claw clips are also being clipped on to handbang handles or straps as an accessory — a trend Goldmark said she has noticed.
“We realized women really want a fashionable way to put up their hair that is effortless. So many girls clip them to their purses when they go out at night, and it’s like your companion that can hold your hair back at any moment of the day,” she said. “It’s just like one of those things that you can have on you at all times.”

As ‘90s and Y2K trends continue to influence contemporary street and celebrity style, it seems like the demand for claw clips is not slowing down any time soon.
“As long as there will be cute hair clips, I think claw clips are here to stay,” Ju said. “I definitely want to stay super creative with our ideas. A lot of people have been like, ‘It seems like a trend that’s going to kind of come and go,’ but I think it just depends if the designers keep making cute stuff.”
Goldmark concurred, saying, “When people get in the habit of using something they’re really comfortable with and doesn’t dump their hair, I can’t imagine a world in which they’re not going to want that product. But it’s up to us to continue creating unique hair accessories, whether it is claw clips or other ways of keeping your hair up and out of your face or accessorizing your outfit.”

Take Revlon’s outrageously popular One-Step Hair Dryer & Styler; last year this hair tool was a whopping 60% off. Let’s be honest – we never see a sale this good. Or T3’s high tech hair tools, including their hero product, the Cura Hair Dryer, which boasted a discount of 30% off. And if you need to stock up on sunscreen to get you through the last bit of summer? Amazon Prime Day’s got you covered here too, with SPF essentials from Supergoop and La Roche-Posay. Whatever beauty product you’re looking for, start your search with Amazon Prime Day and be prepared to be blown away by all the savings. The 15 Best Conditioners for Every Type of Curly Hair

The 15 Best Conditioners for Every Type of Curly Hair

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission.
Learning how to tame our hair, I’d argue, is the great equalizer of humanity. Frizzy, dried ends and hair that just isn’t working — we’ve all been there. And people with naturally curly hair can often feel this struggle a little more deeply, unless preventative measures are taken.
As anyone with curly hair can attest, they usually fall within two categories: Those who embrace their natural texture and those who fight tooth and nail against it. But however you choose to style your curly hair, starting with a solid foundation of healthy, hydrated hair is not as simple as it sounds. In fact, sudsing up with regular shampoos and conditioners will leave curly hair dry, dull and frizzy — a definite no in our book.

Why does curly hair need a specific conditioner?
“Curly hair tends to be much drier than those with straight hair because the natural oils from the scalp are unable to travel throughout the hair shaft and distribute moisture evenly, resulting in dry and fragile hair,” explains celebrity stylist Andrew Fitzsimons.

What’s even more challenging, says celebrity hairstylist and co-founder of Flawless by Gabrielle Union, Larry Sims, is “the tighter the curl, the drier it becomes.” And the solution? “You have to make sure that you consistently give your hair deep conditioners. It’s moisture, moisture, moisture for curly hair.”
And yet, even with all the curly hair products out there, it’s not so simple to find the best conditioner that will enhance your specific hair type and curl pattern while addressing common curly hair concerns, like frizz and damage.
“There are many factors that go into finding the best conditioner for your hair type,” says stylist Annagjid “Kee” Taylor, who adds that each hair type is further broken down to subcategories to reflect various hair textures. “This makes it easier to pinpoint the best ways to manage your hair type. You want to pay close attention to your curl pattern, porosity and thickness.”
For example, a lightweight hair conditioner designed for wavy type 2 hair just won’t cut it when it comes to type 4 ringlets or coils. “Type 4 needs significantly more hydration,” says Taylor. “Type 4 requires products that are thicker and creamier in consistency, but these products would weigh down type 3, making it flat, oily and without bounce.”
Top Conditioners for Curly Hair of 2022
What should I look for in the best conditioners for curly hair?
“All curls have different needs,” says stylist Christin Brown. “Someone with straight to wavy hair may only need light moisture, versus type 3 or 5 curls that need maximum moisture and maybe even a leave-in conditioner, too.”

She recommends staying far away from conditioners with sulfates and silicones, which can dry out hair in a snap. Look for coconut-derived ingredients or avocado and grapeseed oil as opposed to “ingredients you can’t pronounce.”
Conditioners for Type 2 Hair: “Type 2 hair ranges from slightly S-waved hair and it’s usually fine, to a wave pattern closer to a true curl that tends to frizz easily,” says Fitzsimons, who adds that people with this hair type should use products that won’t weigh their hair down. “Avoid products that are heavy, so lots of waxes, oils and creams fall into the no-go category.”
Conditioners for Type 3 Hair: Sims describes type 3 as a solid step up from type 2, forming a clean, definitive S-shaped curl that tends to be thicker at the root. “With 3, you definitely have to make sure you have moisture in your hair,” he says. “Go for products that feel a little heavier, like creams, for type 3 texture because it’s a little more absorbent and I’d also do a leave-in conditioner.”
Conditioners for Type 4 Hair: “The jump to type 4 is hair that’s coarser and way more thick than type 3,” says Sims, who suggests looking for heavy, oil-based creamy conditioners. “The biggest challenge for type 4 is moisture, and I would do a leave-in on a daily basis.”
Learn how to master your curl regime — once and for all — with these celeb stylist-approved recommendations and tips.

Most Affordable Conditioner for Curly Hair
Use this ultra-rich nourishing conditioner as a normal daily conditioner or as a primer before styling to add extra moisture into hair. “Conditioner is super important for curly hair because it holds in moisture, especially after shampoo, which can strip away natural oils,” says stylist Sabrina Porsche. “Conditioner helps bring that lost hydration back.” And this everyday conditioner by Twist proves that you don’t have to shell out the big bucks to attain healthy, frizz-free curls. Plus, Porsche says, this option “deeply conditions your hair to help restore moisture to damaged hair.”

Briogeo Curl Charisma Rice Amino + Shea Curl Defining Conditioner
Best Curl Defining Conditioner
“Porosity is the most important factor in treating any hair challenge,” says Kevin.Murphy educator, Sarah Lund, noting that high porosity hair means that a cuticle is wide open and can easily accept — and lose — styling products. To ensure that high porosity hair soaks up the styling products and keeps them in place, Lund says it is crucial to “seal hair the cuticle with extra moisture,” which will lock curls into place. This naturally-derived conditioner from Briogeo is rich with rice amino acids, mollis leaf extract and tomato fruit ferment to seal the hair cuticle for frizz-free curl definition.

How to find the right hair conditioner for your curly hair concerns
To fight frizz, damage or any other curly hair challenge you’re having, you’ll need to strategize your plan of attack to address different needs.
“Selecting a conditioner depends on the most pressing needs of the hair,” explains Lund, who suggests taking a look at what your hair is lacking the most.

Parched + dehydrated: “Look for water-loving ingredients, like Kakadu plum, or a light oil or even a vegetable-based glycerin,” says Lund.
Dry + frizzy: “Go for emollients that lock in moisture, like shea or cocoa butter,” says Lund. “You can also rely on thicker oils, such as Brazilian nut or Monoi oil.”
Damaged: “When faced with damaged curls, that is an issue that needs to be addressed first,” says Lund of the drop-everything, do-not-pass-Go hair problem. “To remedy damage, we need to replenish protein loss with products using a vegetable-based protein to avoid the possibility of protein-overload, and coupled with a good moisturizer for the best feeling hair possible.”
Brittle split ends: “If you don’t keep your hair moisturized, you can cause split ends faster,” warns Taylor, before noting that the solution can be as easy as using a very good moisturizing conditioner, but beware of sneaky marketing tactics. “I’ve seen a lot of conditioners that say they can mend split ends, but that is totally wrong — nothing you put in your hair can mend your ends. Once they’re split, they’re split.”
How often should I wash my curly hair?
“To be proactive, make sure that you use moisturizing conditioners every time you wash your hair,” cautions Taylor. And if you have a spare 20 or 30 minutes, she suggests pulling the hair conditioner from root to tip and putting a shower cap on “to get that moisture into those strands really well.” If time isn’t on your side, Taylor recommends washing your hair as soon as you get in the shower to let the conditioner soak in as you go about your business and rinse your hair as the last step.
How do I use a leave-in conditioner?
“Frizziness and curly hair go hand-in-hand,” says Sims. “A great leave-in conditioner is super important in terms of combating frizz and preventing damage by keeping hair moisturized.”
His favorite method of applying a leave-in is always on wash day, starting with a hydrating shampoo for curly hair followed by a moisturizing hair conditioner. Then while hair is still damp, apply a leave-in and pleat hair down at the top of your head, allowing it to air dry so that when you unravel it, the curls are really defined. “A leave-in is really going to have an impact on the amount of moisture in your hair,” says Sims. “But if you have thinner hair and waves, you want to use less product. If you try to do the most with products, you risk having to start from scratch because it looks greasy.”

The Best Gifts for Hairdressers and Hair Stylists This Christmas

The Best Gifts for Hairdressers and Hair Stylists This Christmas

If makeshift quarantine haircuts taught us anything, it’s just how valuable (re: essential) our hairdressers truly are. ‘Tis the season to show your undying gratitude, so what better way to say thank you for their services (not to mention all the life chats you’ve exchanged in their magical chairs) than with one of the best gifts for hairdressers money can buy?
While the generous tips you add to your tab are greatly appreciated and go a long way, nothing says “happy holidays” than a gift you weren’t expecting to receive. This is especially true of hairdressers, notes Devin Toth, a hairstylist at Salon SCK in New York City. “Hairdressers spend so much time taking care of people that they often forget to take care of themselves,” Toth tells WWD. “To be the receiver of a service [or gift] instead of the provider reminds them of how it feels to be taken care of.”

Granted, shopping for the hairstylist on your list can be tricky; what you buy will ultimately depend on the relationship you have with your stylist. Does a gift serve as a thank you to your hairdresser, or are you shopping for a friend or loved one who cuts hair for a living? If you’re friendly or know them on a personal level, you can be more thoughtful and creative with gifts that hint at their hobbies or interests. However, if you’re not sure what they like or if it’s a newer relationship you’ve started with a stylist, stylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago, Shelly Aguirre says something like cash or a gift card to a local coffee shop or restaurant is a safe choice.
To help narrow down the options and spark inspiration for your shopping list, we’ve rounded up some of the best gifts for hairdressers, from the top beauty gifts they can use at home to chic home decor accents they can use to dress up their station at the salon.

The pair comes in four colors (camel, chocolate, navy, and black), and can be worn both in and outdoors (which is perfect, seeing as how they’ll never want to take them off). Maine, Toth, and Aguirre all agree that treating your stylist to a pamper service, like a massage or facial, is also a lovely gesture. The Knesko Skin Gemstone Roller is an excellent option: Choose from four gemstones (rose quartz, obsidian, green jade, or white jade) depending on the energy you’d like to bestow on your stylist. Most recently Ellen DeGeneres revealed during her talk show on Tuesday that she is launching her Kind Science skin care brand later this month. Aniston, who was behind one of the most popular hairstyles of the ‘90s, leveraged her influence for her own hair care line, LolaVie, which launched last month.

Jennifer Lopez’s highly anticipated skin care line, called JLo Beauty, launched on Jan. 1 with eight products such as a cleanser, moisturizer, face mask, eye cream, serum and a dietary supplement. The products are meant to help achieve Lopez’s signature glow with the help of ingredients like squalene, fermented oil, extra virgin oil and leaf extract. The brand is available at Sephora.
“My mom, my aunt, my grandmother, all of them used olive oil as a beauty product [on] hair when it got too dry, on your face and your body, on the belly when you’re pregnant,” Lopez told WWD. “What it does for the skin is amazing, [but] nobody wants to smell like a salad. So, it was like, how do we take the olive and create something that is proprietary to us?”

The singer teamed with Jeanne Chavez and Dineh Mohajer, the founders behind Hard Candy and Smith & Cult, to launch the brand initially with three color collections that offered glitter and metallic options.
The singer has become known for her constantly changing beauty look. A self-proclaimed beauty junkie, Halsey has regularly sported glittery and graphic makeup looks and many colorful hairstyles over the years.
The brand has since expanded to all makeup categories and has embarked on a yearlong partnership with beauty subscription service Ipsy, which has included About-Face products in its Glam Bag X initiatives.

“All of these things help you live the best, more fulfilled life or they aid you to be able to do that,” Upton told WWD. “Everyone is so busy these days and having that extra energy boost and obviously immune support is so important right now, being able to recover from a long day with your kids or working out or stressful work and having that restful sleep.”

Priyanka Chopra Jonas ventured into the hair care category this February. The actress launched her hair care brand, Anomaly, exclusively at Target and teamed with beauty brand creator and incubator Maesa for the line.

Sustainability is at the core of the brand, and each product is housed in recyclable bottles with the shampoo and conditioner bottles using 100 percent PCR content and the hair mask using 70 percent. The line is also meant to be accessibly priced, with all products at $5.99.
“We are going to constantly push innovation to be able to reach a place where we’re amazingly sustainable, but at the same time have superior product for a very affordable cost,” Chopra Jonas told WWD. “We’ve spent less on the bottle and spent so much more on the product. And it’s better for the earth than most. It’s a step in the right direction, and you can afford it. I think it’s the trifecta of that — that was the gap for me.”

Influencer and designer Olivia Palermo debuted her namesake beauty brand in May, which she created in partnership with Paris-based Marie Claire Beauty Group. The skin care and makeup line launched direct-to-consumer with four products, including an illuminating serum, a matte lipstick, a mattifying mist and an eye shadow palette.
“I wanted to create a beauty line that follows my own ethos on fashion — something that fits my mood, but also provides a timeless look that everyone can rely on in a pinch,” Palermo told WWD in a statement. “It’s a collection that mirrors my beauty routine, focused on elevating the essentials. My approach is trying to find innovative solutions that work not just for me, but for the many, diverse women (and men) that make up our global community. We all have different skin types at all ages. Let’s create heirloom products for everyone.”

“We wanted to join forces and create something that made it easy for girls like us or guys or whoever to be given the answers that they’ve been looking for, and how to actually take care of their personal skin, because everyone’s skin is different,” Hudgens told WWD in an exclusive interview. “When your skin looks great, you feel great. It’s something that we want everyone to be able to feel.”

The brand’s products include cleansers, moisturizers, night creams, serums, masks, eye cream and lip masks.

Johansson did not reveal what the unnamed beauty brand will entail, but in a statement to WWD said: “I’ve been fascinated by the transformative power of beauty since I was a child. My mother instilled in me a passion for self care from my early teenage years. Several years ago, I took a step back from my beauty deals with the goal of creating something true to me. The result is a clean, accessible approach to beauty.”

The line takes inspiration from beauty trends popular during that time, offering products like high-shine lip gloss, pastel eye shadow colors, highlighters and a glittery lavender travel case.
“What I really wanted to do with this capsule collection was relive my teenage nostalgia,” Azalea told WWD. “If I was gonna put on a baby pink eyeshadow in the early 2000s, I would have sat there all day long, and it never would have been as bright as what it is now. We’ve come so far with that.”

“I’m so excited to share Kinlò with you! I founded Kinlò to address a public health need around skin cancer prevention within our POC communities,” Osaka said in a statement on the brand’s Instagram account. “Tennis can be challenging at times, but it has given me this platform which I am so grateful for.
