Usually it’s the latest It bag or a buzz-worthy shoe causing a frenzy on the fashion scene. This season, the Bottega Veneta drop earrings are the must-have item on everybody’s shopping list.
“We have received well over 100 requests for these earrings,” Gabriel Waller, global personal shopper for celebrities like Hailey Bieber and Khloé Kardashian (aka: the queen of finding in-demand, hard-to-source fashions), tells Vogue. “Although that is not unusual for one particular piece (for example: the Hermès Chypre or the Chanel quilted loafers reach far beyond that), it is the timeframe in which we received those requests.” Turns out the eager demands for the newly dropped jewels poured in quickly within an impressive 48-hour window.
What sparked the sudden interest? Well, Dua Lipa got a head start on the trend wearing the earrings early August. Then, Kendall Jenner made heads turn in a supersize gold pair at the U.S. Open on September 11. On the very same day, her little sister Kylie posed for a selfie on Instagram in the silver version.

Since then, the Jenners have been seen wearing Bottega Veneta’s drop earrings over and over again. After all, the bulbous silhouette feels a bit more timeless than any actual trend. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Bella Hadid are also trendsetters who might have influenced a few eager shoppers to immediately hit add to cart.
But those stars aren’t the only reason why these teardrop gems are so special. “They are a runway piece,” Waller goes on to explain. “So I believe they would have caught the attention of quite a lot of people when they were first spotted there.” Back in February, the beloved earrings made their debut appearance on the runway in Matthieu Blazy’s very first collection for the fashion house.

For her second appearance over Remembrance weekend, the Princess of Wales turned to Catherine Walker, whose Chelsea atelier provided countless designs for Diana, Princess of Wales throughout her years as a working member of the Firm. Most famously, the homegrown British label is behind some of the late royal’s most memorable evening gowns, worn everywhere from Saudi Arabia to South Korea.

Kate, however, frequently wears Catherine Walker for more reserved occasions (including Remembrance Sunday in 2019 and 2020). This year, the Duchess joined the Queen Consort on a Whitehall balcony to watch the wreath-laying ceremony – led, for the first time, by King Charles III – wearing the label’s Evie coat dress, a military-style design that nodded to the nature of the occasion. (As the cofounder of the brand, Said Cyrus, told Vogue previously: “I’m very aware of the fact that we design for businesswomen who have an important role in life… They come to Catherine Walker & Co for garments that are suitable for the role they are playing and that match up to the power they have.”)

The Princess’s earrings, meanwhile, have an even stronger connection to Diana: Kate inherited the diamond and pearl set from her late mother-in-law, and recently wore them to attend the Buckingham Palace Reception for foreign dignitaries on the eve of the Queen’s funeral. For her part, Diana preferred to wear the horseshoe-shaped studs and drop pearls with the Spencer tiara, most notably during a performance by the English National Ballet in Budapest in 1992.

There are strict protocols around royal mourning dress, with the colour black acting as a visual symbol of grief and symbolic jewellery and military tokens worn as a sign of respect. At the Westminster Hall service, marking Queen Elizabeth II’s final departure from Buckingham Palace before she lies in state ahead of the funeral, the Duchess of Sussex took a leaf out of her sister-in-law’s style playbook.
While the new Princess of Wales wore pearl drop earrings once belonging to Princess Diana and the Queen’s Diamond and Pearl Leaf Brooch, Meghan wore a pair of classic pearl and diamond studs that were gifted to the former actor by Her Majesty. (When the primary photo ops are shoulder-up car shots in a formal procession, the choice of jewels is everything.)

Meghan, whose whistlestop European tour plans were shelved after the death of the Queen on 8 September, has so far supported The Firm in discreet inky black separates peppered with timeless tokens by Cartier and Jennifer Meyer. Today’s earrings, which she framed with an understated veiled headpiece and boxy coat, allowed the Duchess to pay respect to the former monarch without looking at all showy – a crucial balance to strike when the entire world is watching.

The Sussexes joined other royals who gathered to receive the Queen’s coffin at Buckingham Palace last night, before it was draped with the Royal Standard and the Imperial State Crown placed on top for today’s procession. Meghan and Harry will then pay their respects to Her Majesty one final time at Westminster Abbey on 19 September, alongside heads of state, dignitaries and the general public, who have turned out in their thousands to honor the family.

Having stepped down as a senior royal and relocated to California, it could have been challenging for Meghan to switch suddenly into formal mode. But the Duchess – who wore those special earrings during her only solo engagement with the Queen in 2018 – was the picture of polish and poise.

Cannes Film Festival may be a celebration of the best cinema across the globe, but on the red carpet, the annual event is all about sartorial statement makers. Flying in from countries far and wide, celebrities have been seen sauntering down the red carpet year after year in extravagant couture pieces—and sparkling jewels to match.
The 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival kicked off on May 17, and has already had stars serving up some stunning looks, each complemented with the perfect baubles. To kick things off, American actor Viola Davis made an appearance wearing a bejeweled Bird of Paradise in her hair, and not too long after, Julianne Moore stepped out in a classic black gown amped up with a diamond and emerald Bulgari neckpiece.

Not-so-basic earpieces are already proving to be a favorite this year, with Toni Garn pairing her backless white gown with delicate winding creations by Messika, and Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz opting for dangling diamond ear cuffs.

Chopard, the Swiss jeweler that has designed a special Palme d’or trophy for the 75th edition of Cannes, also had its big red carpet moment with Eva Longoria donning a classic black diamond-studded choker by the French Riviera, while Piaget stole the spotlight with Katherine Langford, who styled her shimmering gown with an elegant neckpiece worn backward. And then there was Elvira Jain, who made a case for rubies in a Bour by Jahan choker set, which she wore with a semi-sheer black Atelier Zuhra ensemble.

“It’s a beginning,” mused Miuccia Prada at the press conference on Prada’s spring/summer 2021 collection—the very first she created in unison with her new co-creative director, Raf Simons. With the Belgian designer at her side, Miuccia presented what Prada does best: a series of modern essentials.

The Prada logo took center stage. Hero pieces included sporty-chic, low-heel sling-backs, but it was the 925 sterling silver plaque studs and Symbole pendant earrings that really caught Prada fans’ beady eyes.

The jewels chimed with the logomania renaissance and proved an accessible way for Gen-Z customers to gain access to Miuccia x Raf. The punky studs were worn on different parts of the ear, offering a refreshingly contemporary—and instantly Instagrammable—styling trick. The swing tag versions, featuring a shimmering silver motif suspended upon a hoop earring, caused quite the commotion, too. The duo’s following autumn/winter 2021 collection solidified the logo plaque gems as a new-age Prada signature: the earrings reappeared in cherry-red and sunshine-yellow, offsetting the jazzy retro prints worn by the models.

Maybe the Zoom landscape and terms like “waist-up dressing” inspired the power pair to create jewels to suit our daily screen-bound fashion needs. Statement jewelry—specifically video call-friendly earrings—is an easy way to elevate any look, and provide the ultimate nod to your favorite brand. What’s more, the triangular emblem resonates with younger Prada fans, partly thanks to the resurgence of the well-loved Re-Nylon Re-Edition shoulder bags.

Trend follower Dua Lipa owns both the Symbole earrings and the Re-Edition bag. She wore the former for a series of holiday snaps, in which she also wears a pristine white mini from The Attico, Balenciaga shield sunglasses, and holographic flip-flop platforms. Elsewhere, Storm Reid wowed on the red carpet in showstopper custom eyelet-adorned Prada separates, fastening her hair in an incredible 13-foot braided ponytail to let her earrings shine.
It’s down to personal preference whether you pick the studs or the solo Symboles, but one thing’s for sure: both logo gems are a surefire summer winner.

The fourth-generation Fendi has been at the helm of her namesake jewelry brand for over a decade, and was recently enlisted by Fendi’s new creative director, Kim Jones, to oversee jewellery at the house. Delettrez’s Zoom-worthy statement earrings featured in Jones’s first spring/summer couture 2021 show for the house, but the pretty earbud accessories were released under her own label.

On Instagram, a clip captioned “how I take my calls now” shows the pearl chain earrings in all their glory, and a further scroll reveals Delettrez’s handy AirPod holder necklace.

Those with unpierced ears should look to Louis Vuitton’s Nanogram Earphone earrings, unveiled last summer. The dangling, monogram-adorned chains feature a cuff that slots over the post of your AirPods, with two asymmetric dangling chains. Misho founder Suhani Parekh describes her striking gold designs as “handcrafted modern architecture for the body”.
