Royals in Pantsuits: 28 Times Queen Rania, Princess Diana, and More Inspired Us To Power Dress

‘Power dressing’—the act of styling oneself to assert authority, most commonly in a finely tailored suit—has long been a fine art. In the Seventies, the trousers were flared and fabulous; the Eighties were defined by bigger-means-better shoulder pads; and by the end of 90s, it was all about a relaxed yet perfectly proportioned fit. But one theme has stuck throughout the power suit’s metamorphosis: it’s backed by a legion of ultra-stylish royals.
Princess Anne was an early adopter of women’s tailoring, wearing white suits reminiscent of Bianca Jagger in Yves Saint Laurent as far back as 1973. Later, Diana, Princess of Wales led the pack with an androgynous appeal. The Countess of Wessex took the baton in the early Oughts in a plethora of pastel sets, and now, the Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex compete for best dressed, buttoned up in Alexander McQueen and Loro Piana. Queen Letizia of Spain keeps it bold in vivid hues, Charlotte Casiraghi opts for tweed from Chanel or Gucci, and Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden has a penchant for prints.
Those in need of some powerful wardrobe inspiration, look no further. See below some of our favorite royal tailoring moments.

Can a Slouchy Gray Pantsuit Pop on the Red Carpet? Zendaya Says Yes With Her Latest Outfit

Can a Slouchy Gray Pantsuit Pop on the Red Carpet? Zendaya Says Yes With Her Latest Outfit

It’s safe to say the women’s pantsuit is now in its slouchy silhouette phase, with the help of a big push from Zendaya. After making headlines in a form-fitting pantsuit at the Vanity Fair Oscars After-Party, the 25-year-old star attended an event for her show Euphoria last night, proving she can pull off a relaxed version of the tailored ensemble with just as much ease.
To make a bold statement, the actor looked to Fear of God, the brand helmed by designer Jerry Lorenzo and well known for both, loungewear and contemporary tailoring. The suit featured his signature design traits such as the lapel-less blazer, and a silhouette that was all about laid-back elegance. As if that wasn’t enough to earn Zendaya style points, the Spider-Man star took it a step further with a refreshing new take on neutral colors. Zendaya’s outfit came in a cool shade of gray that is rarely seen on the red carpet even in the form of one piece, let alone in a monochrome moment like the actor’s, whose blazer, crew neck top, trousers, and Louboutins all featured the same color.

The Dune lead kept the rest of her look minimalistic with a watch, a few rings, and Bulgari diamond earrings, and her glam for the evening matched the relaxed but polished vibe of her outfit. For her hair, Zendaya looked to one of her signature gelled-back hairstyles, but this time in a chic bob tucked at the nape of her neck, while her makeup look was completed with a grey smoky eye and glossy nude lips.
Although most noteworthy, Zendaya is not the only renowned name to have made a case for the slouchy, monochrome suit recently. At the Invictus Games 2022, Meghan Markle too wore a custom Valentino oversized suit in white, which was followed by Saudi actor Fatima Al Banawi‘s pastel blue pick by designer Arwa Al Banawi, and Kim Kardashian‘s navy blue number by Prada.

Stars of the Arabic remake of Suits came together in Dubai last night to celebrate the highly-anticipated show’s premiere. Walking down the red carpet were Asser Yassin, Ahmed Dawoud, and Mohamed Shahin dressed in dapper suits, while female actors Reem Moustafa, and Tara Emad opted for distinct dresses channeling their personal style.
Egyptian-Montenegrin star Emad’s look, in particular, stood out with its splash of color and the ultra-feminine aesthetic she is known to often embrace for her public appearances. The floaty dress was picked from Chanel‘s Spring/Summer 2022 collection and featured a sleeveless black bodice with a collar, and a silk chiffon skirt printed with pastel pink, yellow, and blue patterns. A friend of the French fashion house, Emad also picked a chain logo belt to adorn her waist and a black clutch as her arm candy for the evening. Her long hair was worn down in her signature glossy waves, while her makeup complemented the low-key look with glowy skin and nude lips.

Set to release this year during Ramadan on OSN, Suits Arabia will see Emad take on the role of Rachel Zane famously played by Meghan Markle in the hit US series. Although absent at the premiere, Jordanian actor Saba Mubarak is also part of the ensemble cast and will play the role of Jessica. The 30-episode series will be based on the original’s first two seasons and will premiere on April 2.
