Carrie has never had a particularly bonne time in Paris, has she? In the final series of Sex and the City she wanders the French capital’s arrondissements alone, misses her own book party, and realizes she’s made a grave error in going Euro-hopping with busy Russian beau Aleksandr Petrovsky.
And in the final episode of And Just Like That’s first season, it’s Paris she travels to scatter Mr. Big’s ashes into the River Seine (from a Timmy Woods Eiffel Tower bag-turned-urn while wearing a tangerine Valentino gown, no less). After Aidan’s return and Carrie’s foray into flat shoes, no potential plot twist in And Just Like That season two could really surprise us, but Bradshaw’s return to her French-style tricks of old are admittedly intriguing.
Surely a beret would remind of her of Big in the same way a high blood pressure-inducing entrecôte steak would? Carrie was memorably sporting one the night she showed up at his apartment to see him off to Paris in season two and ended up flinging her McDonald’s in his face. Does she really want to revisit the style tropes associated with failed relationships and a dead husband?

But in new photos taken during filming on the upcoming series, Carrie is indeed channeling Parisian chic in the Big Apple, avec a woven beret by Gigi Burris and a nipped-in bourgeois cardigan, with a feminine floral dress, bow detail pumps and a raffia bag. Sarah Jessica Parker was filming a scene with John Corbett, who plays Aidan, and he had a suitcase in tow on set. Perhaps he’s back from a business trip sourcing furniture, or maybe he and old flame Carrie are taking a mini break to celebrate their on-again romance? Their jaunts upstate were never particularly successful… so if they are escaping Manhattan, let’s hope they’re avoiding both Suffern and Paris, beret or no beret.

Filming on season two of HBO Max’s And Just Like That…, the Sex and the City sequel series, has officially begun. Details on the next phase of Carrie’s journey are under wraps, but thankfully, the show’s costume department has taken to sharing tantalizing sneak peeks of Carrie’s fashion on Instagram this upcoming season. A new on-set photo, released on Monday, shows Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays the iconic character, wearing a very on-trend head-to-toe pink—or, to be more precise, fuchsia—look.
The outfit is sophisticated and polished. In the photo, the perennial It Girl wears a vintage dress and purse, paired with the Ada chain and Connexion diamond pendant necklace from fine jewelry brand Jemma Wynne. Bradshaw kept things sleek and timeless by styling her gray-blended hair in a slicked-back bun and what appears to be a fabulous “no-makeup” look.
According to the caption, the outfit is a Sex and the City universe milestone. It’s the first time Carrie Bradshaw has worn an ensemble all in one color—a big pivot for a character known for pulling together outfits from seemingly disparate pieces. For example, an Hermés scarf turned into a bandanna and paired with a pink cocktail dress; A belt wrapped around an exposed midriff. In Carrie’s world, chaos is cohesion.
But who says people can’t change? Sure, at first glance, monochromatic dressing does feel very un-Carrie Bradshaw. But, then again, being on trend is very her. Head-to-toe pink looks are all the rage right now, thanks primarily to the delightful designs of Pierpaolo Piccioli at Valentino. Zendaya, Lizzo, Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan and many others have rocked all-pink-everything get-ups this year. If Carrie were to ever embrace tonal fashion, now is certainly the time.
We certainly trust costume designers Molly Rogers and Danny Santiago on the claim that this is Carrie’s first foray into monochromatic minimalism. As illustrated in And Just Like That… The Documentary, they—along with SJP— have a near-encyclopedic knowledge of Bradshaw’s costumes throughout the years, aided by an extensive and robust archive and meticulous documentation.
And don’t worry. It doesn’t seem like Carrie has completely abandoned her love for delightfully zany and unexpected styling. Just last week the costume department shared a glimpse of the character strutting around town with a pigeon clutch designed by JW Anderson.

This is the fictional figure who wore men’s shirts as dresses and giant bird feathers on her head! In the reboot series, And Just Like That, Carrie’s closet has only gotten even more experimental—right down to the vintage Jean Paul Gaultier suits and her babushka-style headscarves. Now that the HBO show is currently filming its second season, Parker just shared a sneak peek at what we can expect from Carrie’s style once again—and it appears she’ll be rocking some of her boldest accessories yet.

Sharing a behind-the-scenes photo captioned “streets of NY,” Parker offered a waist-down photo of herself from set in character. While only her cropped cargo pants and accessories are in view, it’s enough to make any fashion lover giddy. Let’s start with the whimsical bag. We can’t wait to see Carrie lug around JW Anderson’s pigeon clutch, which retails for $870. The 3-D printed bag is fully functional, but is a cheeky way to honor New York’s most pesky denizens. Shoes-wise, she’s also seen sporting archival Dior heels that she wore in the first Sex and The City film—she’s the queen of re-wearing her iconic pieces—with knee-high socks. She even added a tiny Fendi anklet bag, a purse so small it could fit a tiny lipgloss and maybe a pack of gum.

Now, the kitschy shoes and bag are hardly everyday staples, but it wouldn’t be a Carrie outfit without a dash of impracticality. Isn’t that why you watch the show in the first place?

If you’re a Sex and the City or And Just Like That fan, you likely strongly associate Sarah Jessica Parker with Carrie Bradshaw—but don’t go confusing their personal styles. In a new video, the actor sat down with Vogue to revisit some of her and Carrie’s best looks, and she says the duo couldn’t be more different. “Carrie was a much more courageous dresser than I am,” Parker tells Vogue. “She has a much more fevered relationship with fashion, and much more indulgent. I’m much more of an observer.”
Since she burst onto the scene in the ’80s, Parker has made an impact on the red carpet. Back in 1987, she wore a vintage, sleek tuxedo to a Young Artists United party, along with other secondhand accessories. “I wore that peace necklace a lot. I still have it,” she says. “I shopped at thrift shops a lot, because it was a necessity.” At the 2000 Emmy Awards, we saw Parker adopt a more classic, Old Hollywood aesthetic by wearing a white Oscar de la Renta gown. “My favorite memory is himself,” says Parker of the late designer (who was also one of Carrie’s favorites). “He was always so invested, always cared, and took care of details. He also always smelled good.”
Parker’s life in looks wouldn’t be complete, however, without learning the backstory behind some of Carrie’s most iconic outfits too. The famed tutu she wore for the show’s intro in 1998, for instance, was not a one-of-one piece. “A lot of people claim they have the tutu,” says Parker. “Pat [Field] has one, Michael Patrick King has one, I have one. Filming that sequence probably required 5 or 6 of them.” She also reminisced on the giant bird she wore on her head for the 2008 film’s wedding scene, in which she also wore a structured Vivienne Westwood gown. “When I saw this bird, I thought the colors were so magnificent,” says Parker. “When I came to set [with it on], Michael was like, ‘Why is there a bird on your head?’”
As for more recent style hits from Parker? The star pointed to her many Vogue covers over the years, her latest one being in December 2021, shot by Dan Jackson. Turns out, it was a shoot that earned her some major cool-mom points. “I showed my daughters,” says Parker, “and both of them went, ‘You’re on the cover of Vogue?! That was very touching to me.”

The iconic Versace dress almost became a bedspread. Carrie wore a hidden tutu to Big’s funeral. And six identical outfits were purchased for the vomit scene.
And Just Like That…, the new Sex and the City series from HBO Max, has fans defending Steve and ogling Manhattan real estate like it’s 1999 all over again. And perhaps more important than the sex, the city, or the celebrity is the style. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) are older and wealthier. Their closets are bigger, and their hips more brittle. What would the gals wear 18 years after the original series’ final episode? Nancy Pelosi–esque monochrome coats? Tie-dyed sweatsuits? Eileen Fisher?
“Coming out of the pandemic and quarantine, I really didn’t want to see Charlotte drop off the kids at school in athleisure,” Molly Rogers, the costume designer for the series along with Danny Santiago, told Glamour. “The content of the show is very real. They’re dealing with marriages and deaths. I wanted the clothes to be as uplifting—give people eye candy like the original show always did. That incensed some people!”
Rogers could easily be a beloved character on And Just Like That…. She worked on Sex and the City since the original series’ early days, alongside original costume designer Patricia Field, whom Rogers also joined on The Devil Wears Prada and Ugly Betty. Describing the AJLT costume department, Rogers said, “We had two things: ice cream and drinks.” A scene where Nixon’s outfit matched a tablecloth drove her “cuckoo-nuts.” And when AJLT showrunner Michael Patrick King nixed her idea for Carrie to wear a hat in the finale, Rogers wrote him a poem that begins, “Where is his body? They ask me.” (She jokes that she’s going to get revenge with a hat line called And Just Like Hat.)
Rogers broke down 10 of her favorite fashion looks from the series. The vintage gems, the Net-a-Porter finds, the custom Fendi, and a shoe that Sarah Jessica Parker nicknamed Phyllis. Read on for what Rogers calls, in a whisper, “hat drama.”

That was a beautiful vintage dress that Danny brought out of his archives, his warehouse in Miami, where he has things that he’s collected for 30 years. Lillie Rubin was the label inside that dress. It just had enough of that element of Carrie with the crinoline under it to be kind of a tutu, but still somber.
There’s that line of dialogue where she says she kind of dressed for Mr. Big. So it needed to have a little twist to it, which was the hat. That’s such a classic silhouette. We were going to do something really unusual to it—we had this old, distressed panel of flowers and we shoved them up under the dress in the front where the dress lace parts like a curtain. It was stunning. And then we read the script again and she says, “I said no flowers.” We were heartbroken.

Everybody loved that sweatshirt. I found it at Reformation. One Sunday morning I was having coffee and walked past the one on my block—they have really good vintage sweatshirts and really good prices. Not all of their stores have this little stash of vintage, but the one on my block in New York does.
S.J. cut the neck out of the sweatshirt, cut the sleeves where the ribbing is, and rolled them up. For me that outfit was classic Carrie. She has on a vintage dress that has sequined dragonflies or something on it. It has this train in the back so it’s very la-di-da.

Do you remember when she goes home from the comedy club and sleeps at the apartment and doesn’t have a duvet so she pulls all these archived clothes out and puts them over her as a duvet? That was supposed to be that Versace gown that was used as a blanket. They moved up that scene and shot it in August. All of Europe is on vacation in August, and we couldn’t get anyone to get off the beach to go into the Versace archive in some warehouse far outside Milan. We told the producers, “We can’t get our hands on it.” So they said, “We’ll put it in the closet scene.”
Versace keeps it in their temperature-controlled space, and we just ask for it when we need it. It’s in a big crate—I think someone flew with it. Sarah Jessica does not want that dress on a hanger because it stretches out. You saw how she carried it in the scene like a dead body. And so we leave it on the floor. It’s like, “Oh! Don’t mind that couture in the corner—it’s just over there on a rug!”

Danny and I were both down at our homes in Miami Beach, and the producers gave us two weeks to prep. We were like, “Let’s go shopping.” What you do here in Florida is you get in your car and get on U.S. 1 and you go right up the coast to Palm Beach, which is where a lot of New Yorkers retire. You just drive your car up U.S. 1 and you go, “There’s a thrift store! There’s a vintage store!”
I found that dress in Palm Beach. I thought it was fab—that ombré color. And Sarah Jessica was like, “Let’s do a straw!” She looks so good in hats. We pulled those Miu Miu lizard shoes out of her archive. She ran to the stock market [in the original series] in those shoes, I think. Those were great—they were chunky and that dress was really thin and narrow, so it was kind of like wearing a slip.
The Fake Scene

I have not gotten to talk about this like I’ve wanted to. This was a fake scene that was supposed to throw people off the scent of what we were actually shooting that day. The code word for it was “The Black Event,” which was Mr. Big’s funeral. They wanted an outfit to throw off the paparazzi.

We had this black-and-white polka-dot Carolina Herrera vintage skirt with a classic Capezio leotard top, and we had this feathered hat, which I was insisting on because I knew the internet would go bonkers if she threw another bird on her head. S.J. was a little squeamish about doing it. People could not figure it out. They thought maybe they were renewing their vows. I was sad the outfit wasn’t in the show—it was one of my favorites.

“This is one of my favorites—that dress was so beautiful on her. It’s a satin vintage cheongsam. One Saturday Danny and I decided to go to a warehouse that someone had invited us to—it was dusty, it was tough, we looked on every rack, and that’s where I think we found that dress. It had no label on it; I think it was $24. She was going to wear it without a jacket, and then it was 32 degrees outside in that nightclub exterior, and she was like, “I can’t make it.” We threw her rum raisin jacket from the movie that she wore when she met Aidan in that restaurant. We were using a lot of silk, oversized blazers on her. The pockets are deep—I love pockets, I can’t live without them. And you know, it looked slouchy and cool, and her teeth didn’t chatter.
The bag that she carried with that outfit was a Fendi bag that they especially made for her. They called us and said, “What color would you like?” We took the Pantone paint strips to S.J. and she said, “Let’s do like a raspberry fuchsia to really pop in the nighttime exterior.” It’s a nice custom piece. And that was the only time that she wore a long earring.

It’s really classic Carrie to grab a crinoline, throw a sweater on top of it, and roll out the door. The funeral dress also has a crinoline under it, and she wears basically a tutu bedroom slipper when she’s coming home from the hospital and the hot bread guy is carrying her up the stoop—there’s a crinoline puff on her foot.
I think that’s a real marker for Carrie: “I’ve got something flouncy on, I feel good in that, it’s making me feel better at the funeral, or coming home from the hospital.” It’s a staple.

We had a meeting when we read that script and I instructed the shoppers: “She’s gonna vomit in this dress. Now go out in New York and find six of anything you can.” So they ran around town finding six jackets, six shoes, six purses! Because we were told it was gonna be really gruesome. I was in the office on Net-a-Porter and saw this Norma Kamali dress and knew it was body-conscious and perfect for going on a date. We got six of them. S.J. tried it on and she goes, “It’s just too long for me.” So we shortened it.
And it worked! We never used the other five. She never messed up the dress. They’re hanging in the storage. And the jackets. And the shoes. We actually only had one of the bags because I found it in Paris at the Paco Rabanne showroom; it was a snakeskin chainmail. The jacket was a white silk Max Mara jacket that was oversized. And the shoes, I want to say, were our go-to summer shoe, which was Aquazzura, these tiny little crystals of different colors. They just look great on her foot. In the night scene they just dazzled.
The “Adult Carrie” outfit

That’s one of my favorites—the saturated colors of that turquoise and emerald? I don’t even think you can call that emerald; it’s such a mix of green. That was our tribute to Yves Saint Laurent. That blue blouse was a vintage YSL. The color block of that was incredible with that blue flower wallpaper in her apartment. That was grown-up Carrie, I thought. It was simple but strong, dramatic, and her hair was loose and wavy. Adult Carrie.”
Carrie’s at-home look

All that is vintage. You can’t tell, but that beautiful colored weird blue jacket she has on literally has rips and shreds in it because it’s so old. I was like, “Are you really going to wear that on television? It looked like an animal got into a fight with it!” And she was like, “Yeah, I think it really adds to its character.” S.J. likes to look at everything we bring in.
She doesn’t bypass anything. But there was just one instance—it was a vintage shoe, and on the inside of the foot it had the designer’s name which was Phyllis something. She and Danny were always trying to set Phyllis with an outfit; they loved it. It was a cute shoe, but we had that whole story about “Get me back into high heels.” I kept saying, “Don’t do it! Don’t do it! Don’t put Phyllis with that outfit!” And they kept saying, “We love Phyllis!” She wears it in one scene where Charlotte takes her to physical therapy. So she got to get it in. It needed to have its moment.

Since And Just Like That hit the airwaves in December, fashion-lover Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) has been wearing outfits that are a mixture of the old and new. In some episodes she wears new pieces like a Carolina Herrera shirtdress; in others, she revives old classics that she first wore in her Sex and the City days, including her trusty blue Manolos and Fendi Baguette bags. In the latest episode, however, Carrie returned to one her best Sex and the City–era dresses of all time—you may recognize it from her disastrous trip to Paris in Season 6.
If you’re a diehard fan of the original show, you’ll remember that Carrie moves to Paris to be with her new artist lover, Aleksandr Petrovsky. (She ends up lonely, and Big comes to her rescue and returns her to her beloved New York). In the two-part series finale, she gets all glammed up for a night out with Petrovsky, wearing Atelier Versace’s Mille Feuille gown with an epic tulle skirt (it’s reportedly valued at $80,000). Only the boyfriend never shows up, and she ends up falling asleep in the glamorous creation in her bed.
In episode eight of And Just Like That, Carrie busts out the dazzling gown once again to show it to Seema Patel, her real-estate agent/friend. “Do you want to see something amazing? It is my pride and joy,” Carrie says. “I’ve only worn her twice. Once in Paris. And once here, just for fun. I sat at that window and ate a whole thing of Jiffy Pop.” While the gown seems to have never gotten her epic night-out, Carrie has clearly held onto her for sentimental value. Who can blame her? But she does say that eventually she’ll pass it down to Charlotte’s daughter Lily, who has been helping her with her clothing archiving. Lucky girl.

There’s been a lot of buzz around what the fashion will look like on new Sex & The City reboot, And Just Like That, which premieres on HBO soon. It’s no wonder why: Carrie Bradshaw—portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker—is one of television’s most notable fashion icons, thanks to her closet of impeccable designer dresses and Manolo Blahnik heels. Sure, we’ve already gotten several glimpses at what Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda are going to wear in 2021, but it’s still one of the year’s most anticipated shows for the outfits alone!

It’s only fitting, then, that for the series’s big premiere in New York City, Parker pulled out a major style moment herself. On the red carpet, the star chose to pay tribute to her well-dressed character by choosing to wear one of her and Carrie’s favorite designers, Oscar de la Renta. (Remember the Oscar wedding dress Carrie tried on in the Sex & the City movie? An unforgettable moment, if you ask us.)

Parker nodded to Carrie by choosing an Oscar evening dress that had a classic, uptown-worthy feel. The custom dress and cape was designed by Oscar’s Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, and featured a sweetheart neckline, beading throughout, and a full tulle skirt that’s meant for twirling (a clever nod to the opening credits of the original show, in which Carrie twirls around in a now-infamous ballerina skirt). Parker then accessorized the refined look—which was styled by Molly Rogers—with custom SJP Collection heels, titled the “Duchessa,” in a pretty rose satin. The look wouldn’t be complete without a stiletto—it is after all another Carrie signature.

For finishing touches, Parker carried a bag by Erdem and wore sparkling jewelry from Fred Leighton, Larkspur and Hawk, and vintage costume jewelry. Overall, it was the perfect modern take on what Carrie would wear to a big movie premiere today—something that mimics the fresh, current lens that And Just Like That’s costumers Molly Rogers and Danny Santiago have been infusing into the show. (So far, Carrie’s new looks have included the classics—like this viral Norma Kamali dress—and brand-new pieces, like a Gucci x Balenciaga bag that’s hot off the runway.) If the rest of the series’ fashion is as good as Parker’s look tonight, though, we may have just officially found our new favorite show.

There are endless outfits from the original Sex and the City series that fans have committed to memory, but there’s one particular dress that stands out. The body-sculpting LBD (more charcoal than black, to be specific) that Carrie Bradshaw – aka Sarah Jessica Parker – wears in season two, episode 15 is nothing short of iconic. Together with her breezy persona and knack for chic accessories – she wears towering heels, shades and carries a vintage Gucci bag – the seemingly simple dress has become one of the greatest SATC looks of all time.
Glimpses of the new installment And Just Like That – which is currently being filmed in New York City – suggest that there’s another potential “Carrie dress” in the works. Unlike her hero ’90s LBD, her 2021 style comes in an elegant powder-blue shade.
The dress (US $215 from Norma Kamali) is slightly longer, too: the hemline is just below the knee, whereas the original was a daring thigh-skimming mini. The update features the same ruched finish, but instead of a high neck it has a draped one-shoulder.
Behind-the-scenes shots showed the actor with her co-star Jon Tenney outside the glamorous Au Cheval restaurant in downtown Manhattan. SJP gave the LBD (little blue dress) a grown-up, modern spin with a cream longline blazer and sparkly sandals, with her hair slicked back into a tight bun.
So far, there’s been a mixed bag of opinions regarding the new series – not only for the fact that Samantha (Kim Cattrall) is absent from the reboot. Carrie’s 2021 wardrobe has been at the centre of online debates: the image of her wearing a dress from Forever 21 was declared a “scandal,” while others have argued that Carrie hasn’t aged as fashionably as they’d hoped.
“Just because you have aged (haven’t we all?), it does not mean you need to abandon your true self,” said British Vogue’s fashion news director Olivia Singer. She even went so far as to compile a shoppable edit of the outfits that Carrie – and her friends – should be wearing: Manolos, Molly Goddard tulle dresses and vintage Fendi Baguettes included. We’re holding out for her famed John Galliano newspaper dress to make an appearance. Come on Carrie.

There are some glimpses of star cast Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis, who have been filming the HBO Max series around New York City over the past few months. Parker, in particular, has been spotted recycling her character Carrie Bradshaw’s signature staples, like the sequined Fendi baguette that has now achieved cult status, Manolo Blahnik pumps, and the giant blossom on her lapel from the third season of the show. But before all of these, Bradshaw’s wide, studded black leather belt by Streets Ahead made among the first few comebacks, last seen with a few outfits on Bradshaw in the 2008 Sex and The City movie.
Additionally, when Parker stepped out in a Dries Van Noten floral blazer, her feathered cap was reminiscent of the giant feather headpiece Carrie wore while tying the knot with Big in the same movie. Back then, the original costume designer, Patricia Field, paired the blue feather number with a Vivienne Westwood wedding gown for the memorable scene. Interestingly, since January this year, faux feathers have become a major addition in fashion, with celebrities like Harry Styles and Lady Gaga donning the look, and designers like Bottega Veneta and Valentino assimilating the ornament in their collections. In 2021, a time calling for an end to fast fashion, the reappearing pieces – styled by the reboot’s costume designer Molly Rogers – are not only easter eggs for fans and a part of the character’s personality, but also send a message of sustainability.

While the ensemble can pass as a more realistic high-low mix since it also included the Gucci x Balenciaga Hourglass bag and Terry DeHavilland platform sandals, it is the possibility of a fast fashion brand appearing on-screen that upset fans and critics. Forever 21 or not, the divisive nature of the looks overall has also led to a general consensus that the outfits leave something to be desired. But almost 20 years later, is it too much to expect the show to still have the sartorial influence it did?
