What does melancholia look like? In a special new shoot captured in the lens of Filip Koludrovic, we join a young girl named Maria as she revisits all the places that hold a special place in her heart. Dressed in a series of moody layers and rich fabrics, Maria takes us on a journey through a cold rainy day, where the moods she experiences are reflected in her attire.
With its artfully captured snapshots, the fashion editorial conveys an important message: that melancholia does not represent a negative emotion, but one that is haunting, bittersweet, and beautiful. Koludrovic’s use of lighting, paired with the model’s body language and a selection of ebony and white ensembles convey the emotion in a way words simple can’t. While Balenciaga’s pussybow coat and Valentino’s cosy jumper bring forth sweet memories, a sharp, all-black Alberta Ferretti pantsuit—worn with an equally striking hat—brings an element of realism into the frame.
Jumping between shades of grey, icy blues and lush greens that evoke thoughts of renewal and rebirth, Melancholia pieces together a dream-like narrative, harkening us back to better times in a world of chaos. It is this very oscillation between the photography techniques that make the editorial so distinctive. A seemingly desolate emotion jumps through with an aura of hope, almost contradicting the very emotion’s purpose. Dive in for a taste.
