Celebrity stylist Law Roach says that there were a number of factors behind his sudden retirement from the business. While he’s been careful not to point fingers or name any names, Priyanka Chopra Jonas’s description of feeling body-shamed by the stylist could be seen as one example of the “politics” and “false narratives” that drove Roach from the industry. He’s not blaming the actor herself, but he thinks she may have been led to believe he’d critiqued her body size when he says he did not.
At the 2023 South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival, Chopra appeared to be referring to Roach, who had styled her for an Oscars event the day before, when she described a stylist shaming her for not being able to fit into sample sizes. “Someone told me yesterday that I wasn’t sample-sized,” Chopra said, per People. “I was hurt and I discussed it with my family, and I cried to my husband and my team, and I felt really bad about the fact that I’m not sample size, and that’s a problem, apparently, and most of us are not, and sample size is size 2.”

But Roach refuted this story in an interview with The Cut, saying he never had that conversation with her. “So again, it is her gatekeepers, how they presented what I said to her to make her feel that way. And if that made her feel bad, that wasn’t—it was taken out of context,” the image architect said. “But I’m sure it was taken outta context to get her to be like, ‘Oh, okay, I’m not working with him no more. He’s insensitive to my body.’ Which I’m like, ‘How is that possible? I’ve been dressing you for literally per-pandemic, and it’s been nothing but great things.’”

In the interview with The Cut, Law Roach explained that one of the biggest issues he’d had was often with other members of his celebrity clients’ teams, who would often “gate keep” access to the star, whoever she might be, which leads to problems of miscommunication like this one. “I think sometimes what it is with them is that they have an agenda and I need to be the bad guy because I’m the one who’s dealing with the clothes and the body,” he said. “But I was really surprised that—I love Priyanka. When you are around her, there’s only so many women in this industry that have that thing. I’m constantly inspired by women, and she has this thing that’s very Old Hollywood, Sophia Loren—it drives me crazy.”

Law Roach Clarifies His Relationship With Zendaya in the Wake of His Retirement Announcement

After famed celebrity stylist Law Roach announced his retirement on Instagram, due to “the politics, the lies, and false narratives,” a recent video of a seating arrangement mix-up at a fashion show had some people pointing the finger at one of Roach’s most visible clients, Zendaya. But Roach himself was quick to defend his friend against the unflattering speculation.
The video shows Zendaya (looking amazing in a leopard-print shorts suit, probably styled by Roach) taking her front-row seat next to Emma Stone at a Louis Vuitton show. Roach follows behind and seems surprised and perhaps a little irritated to find that this was the last seat in the front, meaning he’d have to take a spot behind her.

Some fans on Twitter, TikTok, and elsewhere speculated that this moment sparked a falling out between Zendaya and Roach, which precipitated his decision to leave the styling biz.
Not so! Almost as soon as the theories began popping up, Roach took to Twitter to swat them down. “So y’all really think I’m breaking up with Z….. we are forever!” he tweeted. He added in another tweet, “She’s my little sister and it’s real love not the fake industry love,” which seems to clarify that she was not the perpetrator of the “politics” and “lies” he referenced in his retirement post.

In a recent Vogue interview conducted just hours before his debut runway walk in the Boss show, the iconic image architect explained his retirement in a little more depth: “I’m not saying I’m retiring from fashion. I love fashion. I love the businesses, and I love being creative. What I’m retiring from is the celebrity styling part of it, the being in service and at service of other people.”
So, one last time for the people in the back. Law Roach and Zendaya are forever. Law Roach and being Server to the Stars—that’s over.

Taking inspiration from the concept of deconstruction, Valentino creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli has created a distinctive, one-of-a-kind collection for SS23 – Unboxing Valentino. As a part of nine interpretations relying on renowned stylists in cities across the globe, the maison is now bringing a unique experience to Dubai with a little help from none other than Anna Dello Russo.
Unboxing Valentino is a celebration of individuality and the limitlessness of creative impulses. The diversity of artistic expression that is so essential to fashion is brought to the forefront as each stylist interprets the collection in line with their own visual language. Despite their different approaches, what ties each leg of Unboxing Valentino together is the genderless approach to the collection, which is heavily adorned in Toile Iconograph, a visual attestation to the Valentino identity.

In this unboxing of sartorial expressiveness, the city of choice is just as essential as the stylist. This complex organism relying on repeated patterns – much like the quintessential Valentino Toile Iconograph – becomes the perfect vessel for Unboxing Valentino and all that it hopes to represent. What emerges is an amalgamation of spirits between the maison, the stylist, and the city itself, as unique displays are erected across these nine interpretations – a fusion of styles and stories formed from time, place, and personality.
In Dubai, Valentino is assisted by the iconic Dello Russo, who is without a doubt one of the most influential women in fashion. The creative consultant has a long list of accolades to her name, from being considered one of the pioneers of street style to having a celebrated Vogue career in as fashion editor. Holding a mirror to the city, Anna Dello Russo draws upon the abundance of Dubai to construct her display with Valentino. The window invites passers-by into a world where fantasy reigns supreme – cool aquamarine and gold create the feel of a fish tank as feathers, sequin-clad dresses gloves, statement accessories paint the mannequins like tropical fish.

The remaining physical manifestations of Unboxing Valentino find themselves through the creative expression of Law Roach in New York, Rebbeca Corbin-Murray’s floral-infusion in in London, and Clement Lomellini’s torn paper backdrop in Paris, along with Geum Nam in Seoul, Masataka Hattori in Tokyo, Lorenzo Posocco in Milan, and Mix We in Shanghai. The ninth window exists online, an offering to individuals around the world. Created by styling duo Grandquist, this digital display draws upon the intensity of red, the color that expresses Valentino’s purest essence.
Visitors at Valentino stores in multiple cities around the world can also enjoy in-store activations including styling sessions, while AI powered by GameOn Technology creates dynamic social interactions and a whole new way to discover the collection for those at home. In addition to this, the experience also features an aural dimension, with stylists curating playlists that are a reflection of their installations. Not only will this additional expression of individuality be streamed in select boutiques, it will also be available on the Maison Valentino Spotify page.

Celebrity Stylist Law Roach Says He’s Retiring Due to ‘Politics’ and ‘Lies’

Celebrity Stylist Law Roach Says He’s Retiring Due to ‘Politics’ and ‘Lies’

Law Roach is the most in-demand stylist in Hollywood right now, dressing everyone from Celine Dion to Megan Thee Stallion and responsible for so many of those headline-making ensembles worn by Zendaya. So naturally, it came as a surprise when Roach announced that he’s calling it quits on the fashion industry.
Just two days after styling a number of stars for the Oscars red carpet, Roach posted an image of the word retired to Instagram with the caption, “My Cup is empty….. thank you to everyone who’ve supported me and my career over the years. Every person that trusted me with their image, I’m so grateful for you all. If this business was just about the clothes I would do it for the rest of my life but unfortunately it’s not! The politics, the lies and false narratives finally got me! You win…I’m out.”

Fellow fashionistas flooded the comments with flat-out denials. Designer Christian Siriano wrote simply, “Absolutely not,” while Naomi Campbell added, “Law I won’t let you !!!! We don’t quit .. strived to[o] hard.” Karla Welch, one of the few stylists in Roach’s league, wrote “no,” while presenter NeNe Leakes took a more compassionate approach, commenting, “Mental health is first.”
On Twitter, fans and sleuths immediately went digging for answers behind the decision. In one resurfaced clip, Roach spoke to the poor treatment he’s received in the industry and his reaction to it. “You can’t talk to me any kind of way,” he said. “You can’t treat me any kind of way… I owe nobody shit in this industry. So I’ll walk away from all that.”
Fans of his work have also started posting their favorite red-carpet looks he created over the years. Though he’s collaborated with many stars, Law Roach’s most high-profile and long-lasting client was undoubtedly Zendaya. At the 2019 Met Gala, he famously acted as her “fairy godmother” when she wore a Cinderella-inspired gown.

Last night, Zendaya outdid herself again. Wearing Valentino’s take on Spider-Man chic at the LA premiere of No Way Home, the actor did the unspeakable and made cobwebs look nothing short of resplendent.

The Vogue cover girl and her “image architect” Law Roach offset her modern Morticia Addams-esque gown with twinkling jewels from Bulgari (she’s an ambassador for the brand) and a bespoke mask that surely would have made Peter Parker reconsider his own morph head gear.

Speaking of Parker, Roach has also started dressing Tom Holland, who is incidentally the Euphoria actor’s beau. Their couple’s red carpet moments are quietly brilliant, with Zendaya playing the poster girl for comic book couture, and Holland letting her shine. His bespoke Celine and Prada suiting is not, however, to be scoffed at. Note the very specific shade of yesterday’s tailoring–a rich chocolate brown that brought out the color of Zendaya’s glittering gossamer. Long may they stay together.
