The Style Evolution of Kim Kardashian West, from Socialite to Trendsetter

The Style Evolution of Kim Kardashian West, from Socialite to Trendsetter

There’s no denying, Kim Kardashian, Vogue Arabia’s September 2019 cover star, has an impactful influence on fashion. While today her choices are often sleek and inspiring, her journey to obtaining the polished, Instagram-worthy look has been a little rocky along the way.
When Kardashian first made a name for herself – as Paris Hilton’s stylist and friend – her style featured figure-hugging bodycon dresses, in the noughties IT bags and oversized gold hoops were her go-to accessories of choice. Over a decade later, and beauty mogul has transitioned into a sartorial trailblazer with a fearless approach to fashion. Her daring style is emulated around the world. Whether she’s wearing an emerging streetwear label or a vintage designer relic, the KKW effect has the power to create a new craze, or controversy – either way, she gets people talking.
“I think that Kim Kardashian’s style evolution is definitely something worth mentioning,” says Egyptian celebrity fashion stylist, Yasmine Eissa, “Kim is a perfect reference for how fashion can be a great marketing and PR tool. She started off by wearing high-end party dresses, which were all wearable and could be sourced. She later transformed her style into a bold, unique look. We now see her in second-skin silhouettes, mesh and plastic fabrics, exotic leathers and a lot of pastel and nude colors. She opts for cutouts, transparent pieces, the latest catwalk looks and custom made outfits. Her style is definitely controversial, but it makes her the woman everyone wants to copy.”
In the early years of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, the former reality TV star made laid-back red-carpet appearances in jeans and knee-high boots. This was followed by a series of wrap dresses and platform wedges – before she advanced to designer outfits from the likes of Givenchy, Azzedine Alaïa and Balmain. Kardashian was then spotted on front rows at fashion week and formed close friendships with some of the industry’s most noteworthy names; including Olivier Rousteing, Riccardo Tisci, and Valentino Garavani.
As Kardashian’s style has evolved, we’ve learned to appreciate her elevated take on athleisure, her monochromatic dressing in earthy tones and her interesting play on proportions – often styling an exaggerated fur coat with a waist-pinching bodysuit. In recent years, she has taken inspiration from her former designer-husband Kanye West and adopted a low-key, street-inspired aesthetic, yet she has always maintained a penchant for skintight silhouettes that have become her signature style throughout the years.

Amal Clooney’s elegant workwear is world renowned, but red-carpet dressing – although rare – is another of her skills. Take the showstopper feathered gown she wore to the premiere of The Tender Bar at the BFI London Film Festival this weekend, for example.
For her moment in the spotlight with her husband George, Amal dialled up the glamour in a bespoke creation by 16Arlington. The sequined snow-white strapless gown featured ruched detailing on the waistline, a fitted corset-like bodice and a feather trim. As for the accessories, Amal wore magnificent diamond drop earrings and a yellow diamond ring, both by Moussaieff, and point-toe satin pumps.
The glitzy dress possesses the same whimsical spirit that inspired the brand’s dreamy wedding collection, which launched in the summer. “We design for parties and this is the party of a lifetime,” explained co-founder Federica Cavenati at the time. (Several pieces from the modern bridal edit are still available to shop at Matchesfashion.com.)
Last week, Amal and George attended the LA premiere of The Tender Bar. Amal chose a look from 16Arlington’s archive to wear for the occasion: a shimmering asymmetrical dress with a spliced midriff cut-out.

The Clooneys aren’t the only couple to have taken the BFI London Film Festival by storm. Beyoncé and Jay-Z made a surprise appearance in the British capital last week wearing equally chic evening attire. Bey graced the red carpet for The Harder They Fall screening in a custom figure-hugging velvet gown from Valdrin Sahiti, which subsequently sent social media ablaze.
Emulate Amal’s party look this season with 16Arlington’s offering of dancefloor-ready pieces.

Amal Clooney’s red carpet appearances are few and far between. As a human rights lawyer and mother to two small children, Clooney doesn’t have time to attend every opening or party. Still, she makes the most of every night out, and yesterday at the premiere of husband George’s latest film, The Tender Bar, she brought a bit of glamour to the proceedings. Dressed in a black dress detailed with abstract silver appliqué, Clooney was in her element.
The midi-length dress was ladylike, but the cutouts at the waist and asymmetrical hemline kept things modern. Add on a pair of strappy silver sandals and chandelier earrings from the Reflection de Cartier collection, and you have a striking head-to-toe look. With George in all-black suiting by Giorgio Armani, the perennially stylish couple matched perfectly. Together at a public event for the first time since 2019’s London premiere of Catch-22, the miniseries adaptation of Joseph Heller’s seminal novel that George produced and directed, the night was a triumphant return to the red carpet.
Still, it may be a while before we see them out on the town again. Both Clooneys have busy 2021 schedules. In September, Amal was appointed special advisor on the Darfur region of Sudan at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. George, meanwhile, is set to bring a little levity to the big screen, reuniting with frequent collaborator Julia Roberts for the upcoming rom-com Ticket to Paradise.

Amal Clooney’s Most Memorable Fashion Moments

Amal Clooney is a celebrated humanitarian, successful barrister, mother of twins, and a certified fashion icon to boot. Who else can pull off a big-brimmed hat and white trousers to their own civil ceremony? Or pants on the Met Gala red carpet? She has been seen in creations by her staple favorite designers, Giambattista Valli and Versace, and rare finds from William Vintage, a specialist store in London founded by William Banks-Blaney.
Though the Lebanese human rights lawyer rarely makes public appearances, when she does, the world takes notice. She made her first red carpet debut as Mrs. Clooney at the 2015 Golden Globes wearing a black Dior gown, which she paired with white, elbow-length gloves she made herself. Indeed, Clooney is never afraid to make bold sartorial moves, whether she’s posing on the red carpet with her husband George Clooney or attending the high-profile nuptials of her good friends, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry. In fact, the marigold, ’40s-inspired Stella McCartney midi-dress with cap sleeves she wore to the May 18 royal wedding set the internet into a frenzy, resulting in 1,500% spike in searches for yellow dresses that week. Other recent memorable fashion moments include when the lawyer took to the stage at the Dolby Theater to deliver a touching tribute for her husband at the AFI Life Achievement Gala honoring George Clooney in Los Angeles, wearing a glittering custom Prada ensemble.
Even when she was pregnant with twins Ella and Alexander, the Lebanese beauty never failed to display an unparalleled lineup of head-turning ensembles, proving how elegant maternity dressing can be. Memorably, at the César Awards in Paris, an expecting Clooney dressed her growing baby bump in a white custom Atelier Versace gown boasting layers of fluffy black and grey feathers.
In honor of Amal Clooney’s 43rd birthday today we look back at some of her best fashion moments in the gallery above.
